Private access to Lytle Lake
Surrounded by houses and mesquite trees, Lytle Lake is private and residents-only. Locals cast their lines out for largemouth bass and white crappie or watch the Texan sunset from their backyards. Residents have specific access points depending on where they live and if they have a boat permit. Lytle Lake Water Control and Improvement District imposes irrigation and usage restrictions when the lake level drops below six feet. For some out-of-water activities, the 174-acre Nelson Park is north of the Taylor County Expo Center. It is home to the Abilene Zoo and a popular splash pad for the kids. Lytle's houses hug the shores of the lake. Lakeshore and Shoreline drives offer direct water access. Of the eight subdivisions, the most prominent are Lytle Shores, Lytle Place and Oldham Forbes. "Lytle is hilly with single-family homes and townhouses built in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. But there are even homes I sold constructed in the 1920s," Johnson says. The neighborhood's winding roads lack sidewalks, but mature oak trees shade their spacious lawns and horseshoe driveways. Houses typically start at over 1,500 square feet and reach 4,000 square feet. Unlike the more uniform feel of neighborhoods like Carriage Hills, just south of the airport—Lytle's homes offer variety, with Tudor and Colonial Revivals standing alongside Craftsman and Contemporary custom builds. Prices are comparable throughout subdivisions. Small homes range from $265,000 to $415,000. Larger houses on half-acre lots can cost $500,000 to over $800,000. Johnson notes that the lake doesn't flood and suffers from low levels, restricting how often residents can water their lawns.

B-rated schools in Abilene ISD
New families moving to Abilene due to Dyess Air Force Base get support from the Wylie Independent School District (WISD) and the Abilene Independent School District (AISD), which offer military liaisons to assist with transitions. Come September, the West Texas Fair & Rodeo takes center stage, spreading over two weekends. “Another big thing is the Texas High School Rodeo State Finals,” says Pam Sites, director of Visitor Services for the Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The high schoolers drive their rigs here, and families have been coming for so long that they already know what hotel they want to stay at and what their favorite restaurants are.”
