A highway and a neighborhood close to downtown
Between rural farmland and downtown Abilene, North East Highway 80 is in downtown Abilene's backyard. The area is appreciated for its proximity to respected schools, local splash pads for summer enjoyment, and access to downtown restaurants known for their welcoming atmosphere. As Abilene grows, North East Highway 80 is experiencing new developments and an influx of military families relocating for work. "The military is a major part of who we are here, and Dyess Air Force base is our biggest employer," says Suzanne Fulkerson, Owner and Team Leader of The Fulkerson Group Brokered by Real. She's lived in Abilene for 20 years and has nearly 10 years of experience selling homes. "We have much commerce coming into town. From our Amazon shipping facility to several biotech companies, to The Great Lakes Cheese Factory and Tigé Boats."

Cooling off in the summer at Stevenson Park
"There's so much to do here. There's the Dodge Jones Youth Sports Center, our newest Youth Sports Complex, and Rose Park, popular for tennis and the weekly gathering of local senior citizens," Fulkerson says. Nelson Wilson Park is a small neighborhood green space with a big blue playground. Stevenson Park, located about 2 miles west, has recently undergone revitalization with added tennis and basketball courts and an interactive splash zone. North of the neighborhood, Wildcat Disc Golf Course offers ample open space for outdoor games. Just south, Grover Nelson Park, adorned with oak and willow trees, is home to the Abilene Zoo, featuring over 250 species. The park hosts various activities, including a marine-inspired splash zone, baseball fields and a 25-acre fishing lake.

Get downtown and travel around
Located just 2 miles from downtown, the North East Highway 80 area offers quick access to a rich and historic cultural scene. "I love our downtown. It is undergoing a total revitalization, and we recently welcomed a new hotel. We have a variety of restaurants with an eclectic vibe reminiscent of Dallas," says Robbie Johnson, Broker and Realtor at Keller Williams Realty. United Supermarkets is the nearest grocery store, about a mile north in University Hills Shopping Center. Rockin Rollerz Craft Burger Co, originally a food truck, now has a brick-and-mortar location where locals gather for stacked burgers and milkshakes. A mile south, Galveston Seafood Company, opened in 2020 by a husband-wife duo, offers fresh seafood in a warm, inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a friend's home. "The common request here is for more high-end chain restaurants and a Costco. We have Sam's Walmart, Target, a mall and many local boutiques to meet all your shopping needs," Fulkerson says.

Choice between subdivisions surrounded by trees
Pasadena Heights is a small subdivision south under Nelson Wilson Park, filled with ranch-style houses built with brick and clapboard siding varying in size and color. Big trees cast shadows along big front yards and paved driveways, with houses hovering around 1,000 square feet. Many homes were built throughout the mid to late 1900s, but new developments in the neighborhood geared toward renters have caused concerns for long-standing residents. Radford Hills is in the northern neighborhood corridor and is much bigger, surrounded by more trees and houses reaching over 3,000 square feet in contemporary, brick, and traditional styles. Prices can range from $150,000 for a two-bedroom built in the late 1950s to $425,000 for a four-bedroom built in the 1960s.

September brings the Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Softball Tournament, a cherished tradition. Also in September, the West Texas Fair & Rodeo, held just south of Grover Nelson Park, features five nights of live country music, livestock shows, and bull riding.
