Living next to shopping and Redbud Park

Park Central is a mixed-use area near Dyess Air Force Base, appealing to long-time residents and newcomers. With the city's biggest employer in Park Central's backyard, military housing, apartments and starter homes are easy to come by. Nearly a hundred retailers are just down the street, and access to an active city park offers family-friendly recreation. “There’s a lot of active military personnel here in Abilene because of Dyess AFB. When people retire, they end up staying here and if they were stationed somewhere else, they come back,” says Daniel DeVore, Realtor with Tonya Harbin Team Brokered by Real. He’s been selling houses for the last three years and moved to Abilene for the military.

Down the street from the Abilene YMCA

Just a mile north of the neighborhood on the other side of Highway 83, Redbud Park is an ample green space close to home. The park's $6 million renovation in 2022 made it jam-packed with even more family-friendly recreation, including the expansion of the Abilene YMCA. Youth sports are a big thing in Abilene. The park is home to the Abilene Legacy Little League, formed in 2023 when two other local youth baseball leagues combined. Red Bud Splash Pad's interactive splash zone is filled with families on hot summer days, and the park is also home to a prairie dog sanctuary. A 2-mile drive east, Abilene Country Club – North is the city's premier golfing destination.

Target and Aldi are just a short drive away

Abilene's most visited retail districts are just a short drive away. The Shops at Abilene Village is a regional shopping hub adjacent to the Shops at Abilene and The Mall of Abilene. “The mall is like most malls. It has gone down over time but is still active,” DeVore says. Residents have a handful of businesses to fill the pantry, including Aldi, Walmart Supercenter and Market Street, a regional grocery store. Directly west of these shopping corridors, Garden World has been a locally owned shop since the 1970s. The Taylor County Taphouse is another small business where outside fans cool off patrons. A hand chalk-written menu sits in the back of the taphouse's bar, where locals order signature cocktails and plates of pasta, burgers and steak. Just next door, Betty Rose's Little Brisket is a local favorite established in the 1980s, characterized by its friendly service and authentic Texas barbecue.

Military housing offered at Quail Hollow

The community features midcentury ranch-style and minimal traditional homes, with paved driveways often occupied by pickup trucks and sedans. Streets are broad but can lack sidewalks, and backyards are spacious, enclosed by wooden fences and shaded by low trees. Home prices range from $150,000 for older houses to around $270,000 for remodeled properties. New-builds can go for between $300,000 and $400,000. Apartment complexes and railroad tracks near U.S. Highway 83 contribute to occasional noise. Near Highway 277, Quail Hollow Family Housing is a collection of Spanish-style apartments, townhomes and duplexes reserved for active and non-active military personnel. The neighborhood is in a flood zone due to its proximity to Elm Creek, resulting in higher home insurance costs, though flooding is infrequent.

Summer activities include Art in the Park

In summer, Redbud Park hosts Art in the Park, lively events where families can relax on the grass and dive into creative activities. Each April, the park also welcomes the Big Country Spectrum Connection's annual autism walk, which brings the community together to raise awareness and support.

Less than 10 miles from Dyess Air Force Base

Park Central is located just south of Highways 83 and 277. “Highway 83 encircles the entire city, and I-20 goes partially around the city,” DeVore says. No highways are required for the 6-mile commute to Dyess Air Force Base or downtown Abilene. Though the city is car-dependent, CityLink bus stops are found near the neighborhood's retail districts. Daily flights to Dallas leave from Abilene Regional Airport, 10 miles east. Hendrick Emergency Care Center Plaza is 3 miles south.
