Box Hill South Park is a community green space with a few sports fields, and the Abingdon Dog Park down the road sits atop a high hill. It has two fenced dog runs and, in the wintertime, is a great spot for sledding. “There’s also a natural area called Harford Glen which has a big dam with a lot of nearby walking trails and wildlife,” McGhee says. Folks can park at Harford Glen’s small lot and take to the forest, where they can walk along boardwalks and paths within the marshier parts of the Atkisson Reservoir. The Ward Y in Abingdon is the area’s YMCA and offers memberships for classes, gym use, swimming and other resources.

Bel Air’s Main Street shops and restaurants, as well as the Harford Mall and the Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, are about 5 miles north. For those who commute into the city for work, Baltimore is about 25 miles southwest via Interstate 95, and Washington, D.C., is about 64 miles south on that same highway.
