Small-town living south of Bel Air
Bright Oaks is a small residential area tucked between Emmorton's shopping centers and the Patterson Mill Middle High School. Though it falls within Emmorton, most people consider it a little community in Abingdon. “The community here is thriving and growing. With the robust nature of the APG up the road, that’s done some really great things for the area. Being off the I-95 corridor makes living here really accessible to everything,” says Sean Gomez, the general manager of Pairings Bistro at the Village Market and Cafe. “The community has been hyper supportive of the business over the last 15 years.”
Local supermarkets and small businesses give Bright Oaks a small-town feel. The town has highly-rated public schools and several parks and trails to explore. Housing consists of a few neighborhoods and cul-de-sacs that branch off of Kensington Parkway. Nearby Bel Air has dozens of shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities, and commuters can hop on Interstate 95 to reach Baltimore in about an hour.
Townhouses and mid-century New England homes near Patterson Mills Middle High School
The Bright Oaks townhouse community off of Royal and Laurel Oak Drives consists of several unique units with shared walls and a community pool. Laurel Bush Road intersects with Emmorton Road to create the area’s local shopping and dining hub. Grocery staples like ShopRite and Kleins Family Market sit right next to Marshalls and Kohl’s. Locals can also head north to the shopping centers in Bel Air or to Baltimore on Interstate 95 for a weekend away.
There are a few familiar chains nearby, such as Panera Bread and Burger King, as well as some locally owned restaurants. The Village Market and Cafe offers several options for diners, including a food truck and a market cafe for coffee and breakfast. They also have fine dining at Pairings Bistro, which is located within the market. “Jon Kohler is our owner and proprietor. He’s made contributing to the community a mainstay for the business,” Gomez says. “It’s really rewarding to do more than just take care of our regulars. We’ve done everything from host parties to giveaways like gift baskets and wine dinners for multiple guests.” The restaurant recently added its Village Mobile Cuisine food truck to a fleet of 24 other local trucks supporting the Harford Public Library’s Library Gala.

The fields at Patterson Middle High School make for some popular after-school games during football season and throughout the year. The Harford County Public Library is west of Veterans Memorial Highway, and, in addition to its public amenities and resources, it also hosts private events like an annual Library Gala.
