Long Bar Harbor is a waterfront community in Abingdon
Bounded by Bush River and Otter Point Creek, Long Bar Harbor hums with a nautical and laid-back lifestyle in Abingdon. Locals spend their days boating to waterfront bars and setting crab pots off their docks. Bush River Yacht Club is a social spot that hosts vibrant events, while Anita C. Leight Estuary Center offers wooded hiking trails and scenic kayaking routes. U.S. Route 40, which takes commuters to Baltimore and the Aberdeen Proving Ground, runs along the community’s northern edge. But even with this coastal location and the small summer crowd it attracts, Long Bar Harbor predominantly has full-time residents and maintains a quiet atmosphere. “This isn’t some sort of hectic waterfront destination,” says Kay Deitz, a real estate agent with Garceau Realty who has sold homes in the area since the 1980s. “If you don’t live in Long Bar Harbor, you only come here to go to a marina, get on your boat and leave.”
Some houses sit on the water
Most houses in Long Bar Harbor were built between the 1940s and early 2000s. Ranch-style houses, Cape Cod cottages and New Traditionals are all common. Above-ground powerlines and oak trees stretch over the neighborhood’s asphalt roads. The median lot size is a little over a quarter-acre. Some properties back up to the water, with private docks and boat slips. Houses can have two to five bedrooms and driveways or attached garages. Older homes may start at around $200,000, while newer options occasionally reach $580,000. Heavy rainfall can cause the Bush River and Otter Point Creek to overflow, and some houses in Long Bar Harbor may require flood insurance. Storms also increase water pollution and often prohibit swimming, but Deitz says this doesn’t bother most locals. “This is a community of serious boaters, fishermen and crabbers. Nobody moves here to swim.”
Bush River Yacht Club hosts a crab feast and a car show
Long Bar Harbor is home to several boat storage facilities. Sailboats and powerboats are tied to wooden docks stretching behind the Bush River Yacht Club, established in 1939. Deitz says locals often become members. “Some people join for boat storage, but the social aspect is almost more important.” Members can devour unlimited seafood and fried chicken during the crab feast in September. Corvettes, Camaros and other vintage vehicles fill the club’s parking lot for the car show every April. The Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina on the community’s eastern tip has 93 camping sites available to rent between April and November.
The Bush River Bridge has height restrictions
All boaters in the area must pass under Amtrak’s Bush River Bridge to enter Chesapeake Bay. Boats over 12 feet tall need the draw bridge to open, though this only happens twice a day between May and October. A project to make the bridge taller is currently being planned. “Every boater is patiently waiting for this to start. It’ll just make getting to the Chesapeake Bay less of a hassle.” Construction is expected to start in 2028 and end by 2034.
Anita C. Leight Estuary Center has hiking and kayaking trails
Other neighborhood recreation spaces include Alice and William Longley Park, where kids can play baseball on the grass diamond and run around the playground. Anita C. Leight Estuary Center has upland forest hiking trails, an exhibit hall about Chesapeake Bay ecology and a paddle boat launch into Otter Point Creek. Kayakers and canoers can follow the center’s water trail, passing by cattail-covered patches, sweet flag marsh and bald eagle nests. About 3 miles west, Maryland Sports Arena is an indoor soccer facility, and Ice World offers figure skating lessons and hockey leagues. Gunpowder Falls State Park, 16 miles southwest, has a public beach.
Locals take boats to The Island at Flying Point Marina
Auto repair shops, a 7-Eleven and a few casual restaurants sit along Route 40. But Deitz says most locals prefer boat-up eateries, like The Island at Flying Point Marina, just across Otter Point Creek. “Neighbors will pack into one boat and drive there together.” Thatched awnings shade wooden tables, where patrons enjoy shrimp tacos and listen to live music. “It’s only open between May and October, and it's super crowded all season,” Deitz adds. Big-box grocery stores like Walmart, Target and Aldi are in the shopping centers just off state Route 24, about 5 miles northwest.
B grades and above for Harford County Public Schools
Harford County Public Schools serve the area. Kids can attend Old Post Road Elementary and Edgewood Middle, which both earn B-minuses from Niche. They may continue to B-rated Edgewood High, where the Global Studies and International Baccalaureate Program offers classes like dance, fine arts and French. Students need to be driven to the elementary school, while the middle school and high school have bus routes in the neighborhood.
Route 40 leads to Baltimore and the Aberdeen Proving Ground
Long Bar Harbor is a car-dependent community. Baltimore is a 26-mile drive west on Route 40. An 11-mile drive east on the highway reaches the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford County’s largest employer. “A lot of military families moved to Long Bar Harbor when development first started. I still know active-duty people in the neighborhood.” A freight railroad line runs along the community’s northern edge, and locals may hear train noise. The Edgewood train station, 6 miles southwest, services the Maryland Area Rail Commuter Penn Line. The University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center is 9 miles north, while the Baltimore/Washington International Airport is 37 miles south.
