Ellet
Suburban Neighborhood in Akron, Ohio
Summit County 44306, 44312
Houses sit in gridded blocks or along forested back roads
The neighborhood has apartment buildings and condos but primarily single-family housing. "There's a lot of really good starter homes in the area," says Theresa Allen, an Akron Realtor for more than 40 years. Styles consist of Colonial Revivals, bungalows and ranch houses on the gridded blocks in the northeast or next to forests and empty fields in the southwest. Fixer-upper properties range from $50,000 to $100,000, have two to three bedrooms and were built during a housing boom in the early 1900s. Move-in-ready properties cost between $100,000 and $325,000. These houses have two to four bedrooms and include older, well-kept, midcentury, and homes as young as 10 years old. Northeast homes tend to have lots no bigger than a quarter acre, while lots in the southwest get as big as a full acre. This neighborhood has the All-American Soapbox Derby
Ellet includes several recreational spaces, from parks to a race track. Davenport Park lines Mogadore Road and features a playground and sports fields. Hyre Park and Lion's Park are behind the middle school and have a combined green space with walking trails, tennis courts and a play area. The Ellet Community Center is next to Hyre Park and offers a space for card games, art programs and events. The All-American Soapbox Derby is near the airport and has hosted contests where people have built and raced soapbox cars since 1935.The local high school teaches automatic technology
Being in the city, Ellet has access to the Akron Public School District. Many students begin at Windemere Community Learning Center and transition to Hyre Community Learning Center for middle school. Ellet Community Learning Center is the local high school and offers classes unique to the district, such as automotive technology and animal studies. Niche gives Windemere and Ellet C-grades, while Hyre gets a C-minus.The local community center hosts a summer concert series
Aside from races at the Soapbox Derby, The Ellet Community Center brings people together for a summer concert series. As part of Akron's Concert in the Parks program, people gather at the center to watch local artists perform over four summer weekends. Bands from 2013 included The Jimiller Band, an improv-rock band, and The 80's Ladies, an 80s rock cover band. The Ellet public library also has smaller events, such as community book discussions and public crafting parties. The Akron Fulton Airport supports the Goodyear Blimp
As part of a city, Ellet has access to busy streets connecting to highway networks spanning the country. "It's super easy to get around," says Brett Walchalk, a Realtor with Russel Real Estate Services. Interstate 76 hugs the north side, while Highway 224 is south of the airport. Drivers can take both to get to Youngstown or connect to Interstate 77 to get to Cleveland. "The only problem is that highways make the roads super busy," says Walchalk. The neighborhood's most significant thoroughfares are Canton Road, East Market Street and George Washington Boulevard, which all get traffic from people changing highways and locals moving around the area. Akron METRO also has bus six running through several streets, taking people to the suburbs in the southeast or downtown. The Akron Fulton Airport provides a strip for private flyers and a hangar for the local Goodyear Blimp.Strickland's serves ice cream made with unique machines
Most stores and restaurants are near Canton Road. Acme Fresh Market and Save A Lot keep fresh produce and essentials close by, while local shops such as the Three Thymes tea shop and the Replay Music instrument store appeal to niche interests. One of Ellet's most popular restaurants is The Lamp Post Diner on East Market Street. The restaurant is famous for its He-Man Breakfast Platter and 1950s diner atmosphere, with red leather seating, checkered floors and Coca-Cola signs on the walls. Strickland's Frozen Custard is another Ellet staple and still operates in its original location near the airport. First opened in 1936, the family-run ice cream shop makes custard with unique churning machines invented by its founder. Customers can get vanilla, chocolate and one of two other daily flavors. Other resources are outside the neighborhood. The Springfield Farmers' Market is 2 miles south in Sawyerwood and is open every Thursday. Summit Mall is to the west, with a 13-mile drive to Fairlawn.
Some homes may get noise from the roadways
Since the neighborhood's roads get so much activity, there are a few points of high noise pollution. Homes in the southwest are some distance from the highway, but houses close to Canton Road or the interstate may have some issues.
