Merriman Hills is a suburban neighborhood near west Akron parks, shops
With stately homes that sit on decorated lawns, Merriman Hills is a suburban neighborhood in west Akron. Realtor Jenny Frantz with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services says that this area, often called the Merriman-Portage Path area, draws in a range of people. “You see a lot of these two different generations,” Frantz says. “You’ve got the older generation, which has been there for a long time. And then you’ve got the younger generation finding their way there because they like the walkability.” Several recreational options exist, like Summit Metro Park and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and shopping centers, such as Highland Square, within a few miles. Downtown Akron is about 3 miles away.

The rest of the neighborhood consists of mid to late-20th-century styles, including ranch styles, split-levels and mid-century modern homes. Prices typically fall between $225,000 to $375,000 for smaller properties; larger homes range from $450,000 to $725,000. At Sand Run Metro Park, the rolling hills, access to the Cuyahoga River and hiking trails can be enjoyed all year. While the warmer months welcome birders and kayakers, the park becomes a winter destination for skiing and sledding. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs along the neighborhood’s eastern border. “It’s extremely charming,” Frantz says. During the holiday season, it becomes the North Pole Adventure and takes kids to the park where actors are dressed like Santa and his elves, pretending it’s the North Pole. Portage Country Club is nearby and features an 18-hole course designed by William B. Langford and a swimming pool. “When I have people come into town, I always take them because it’s a great way to meet people,” says Frantz, who is a member.
