Middlebury, Akron's first settlement, is located near major employers
There wouldn't be a city of Akron if it weren't for its first settlement, Middlebury. Location naturally lent its name to the community, which today is positioned between the Akron campus of Summa Health System and the headquarters for Goodyear Tire, two of the top five largest employers in the city, so you won't have to commute too far for jobs, especially when you're in the middle of everything.

Early 20th century homes have a median price under $50,000
The housing stock in Middlebury consists of Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and bungalows, with the highest percentage of its residences built during the early 1940s. Many of the residential streets also reflect this historic character through their rustic ruby-red brick roads. Investor interest has focused on the area throughout the years, which has aided in restoring homes to their former glory. “You can find a home that could use renovations and employ some elbow grease to get a good return on your investment,” says Dawn Maloney, a Realtor with Re/Max Above & Beyond. But at the area’s price point, there are ample opportunities for traditional homebuyers as well. According to Maloney, some of this attraction is due to the median price tag of $47,000, far below the median home price of $95,000 in downtown Akron, which is only a stone's throw away. “Overall, it's very budget-friendly,” she says.

Akron schools and the Goodyear Library offer education opportunities
School-aged children can pursue public education through the Akron City School District. The nearby Robinson Community Learning Center serves students from kindergarten through sixth grade and has a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1, well below the state average of 16-to-1, according to Niche. Traditional middle and high schools are combined into East Community Learning Center, one of seven district secondary schools. When school is over, the Goodyear Branch of the Akron Library, with an interior creatively decorated by local artists, offers opportunities for students to continue their quest for knowledge. But it's not all work and no play here. Let's Get Crafting workshops, the Lego Club and Games Galore for Teens invite the youngest residents to hang out. The University of Akron is also a two-minute drive away for those interested in higher education.

Afterward, burn off some calories by using the Middlebury Trailhead to access the Freedom Trail, which runs north of the neighborhood. After a snowfall, the path turns from a smoothly paved biking route into the perfect venue for cross-country skiing in an area where it's common to see as much as 47 inches of snow fall during the winter.

Developed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. on East Market Street, this historic venue received a facelift during a redevelopment initiative to transform Akron's East End. Now, you can enjoy a show there featuring everything from local bands to national traveling acts.
