This Springfield neighborhood is on the rise
Surrounding Springfield Lake to the southeast of Akron, Sawyerwood was a resort district during the city's industrial age. As the industry declined in the late 1970s, many abandoned their houses to degrade with time. Springfield Township has begun renewing the area with incentives such as the Coalition for Sawyerwood, where the city collaborates with the community to improve conditions. Kelly Chapman, a Springfield Township trustee and coalition member, shares her experience in the program. "We've gotten so much love from the residents for cleaning the neighborhood." Since the project began, new restaurants and stores have opened in the area, benefiting from local business and traffic from the nearby highway.
There are newly empty lots
The neighborhood's homes come in three categories: manufactured homes near the lake and along Canton Road, older homes in the center and newer homes in the center and the west side. In subcommunities such as LivsLakeHous, manufactured homes cost between $17,000 and $23,000. Older houses consist of early-century Cape Cods and shotgun homes with split rail fences and no garage, selling for between $50,000 and $85,000. Newer homes include mid-century ranch houses with detached garages in the neighborhood's center and colonial revivals with attached garages in the southwest corner. Both styles cost between $140,000-$300,000. When asked about housing in the neighborhood, Chapman says, "We used to have a big problem with squatters and drug use in the abandoned houses. The situation's gotten much better since we started demolishing the unsalvageable properties and established a neighborhood watch program," Much of the cleared land goes back on the market for $35,000.
This neighborhood has a Giant Eagle
Three shopping areas are in the community's south corners and north. The plaza in the southwest corner gets the most traffic with its Giant Eagle grocery store and a mix of fast food and local restaurants. One of the plaza's most popular restaurants is Gio's Italian Oven, an Italian-American-style buffet with booth and table seating surrounding a central pizza bar. Uncle Tito's Mexican Grille is in the southwest corner, but it's still the most popular restaurant in the neighborhood for its margarita pitchers and responsive service. "Tito's is easily the biggest hang-out spot around," says Chapman. "Everybody goes there." Sawyerwood is also home to the Springfield Farmers' Market at the end of Canfield Road. Summit Mall is on the other side of Akron, with a 15-mile drive northwest, making it the closest traditional mall.
Planes take off at the nearby airport
Sawyerwood has three primary thoroughfares: East Waterloo Road along the lake, Canton Road and George Washington Boulevard. East Waterloo is also Highway 224, providing a 50-mile drive to Youngstown in the east and 6 miles to Akron through its intersection with Interstate 77. Akron METRO provides bus route six along Canton to take people to downtown Akron. Sawyerwood also has easy access to the Akron-Fulton Airport to the west. Flight schools, private planes and the Goodyear Plimp use the airport.
The Soapbox Derby is nearby
One of Sawyerwood's defining landmarks, Springfield Lake is also home to the local park. "Sawyerwood isn't Sawyerwood without the lake," says Chapman. Park amenities include a community center, playground and pavilion. The lake also hosts local events such as the Rock the Docks festival. People also enjoy spending time at Akron's International Soapbox Derby near the airport. Since 1935, the derby has hosted contests where people worldwide construct wooden cars to race them on its downhill track.
Springfield High School students took part in a state-wide pitch contest
Students attend schools in the Springfield Local School District. Spring Hill Elementary is 3 miles east and offers prekindergarten through second grade. Schrop Intermediate School is 4 miles south and covers third through sixth grade. Springfield High School is less than 3 miles southeast and teaches grades seven through twelve. In April 2024, the high school's multimedia students participated in a state-wide video contest called Ohio's Teen Pitch Challenge, where they would create a video pitching a unique product or service. One student was even a finalist. Spring Hill and Schorp earn C-pluses from Niche, while Springfield High gets a C.
The yearly Rock the Docks festival has carnival rides and fireworks
Aside from races at the Soapbox Derby, Sawyerwood celebrates the summer with the Rock the Docks festival in June. "Oh, it's so fun. There are carnival rides, live music and crafting stations for kids. The whole neighborhood gets together to watch the fireworks at the end of the day. It's a great excuse to keep in touch with neighbors." 2023's festival had a wing-eating contest, a petting zoo, and a dunk tank.
Springfield Lake is closed for clean-up
While Springfield Lake is a community staple, it's closed for public use. The lake is home to several species of algae, some of which are toxic to humans. The algae level fluctuates, but as of May 2024, Springfield Township is barring the public from using it until cleaning efforts reduce the algae to a safe level.
