West Hill
Neighborhood in Akron, Ohio
Summit County 44302, 44303
Residents live in homes and duplexes dating back to the 19th century
Sidewalks and oak trees line the streets, many of which are red brick. Almost every home in West Hill was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is on a small lot. “We’ve got some of the oldest housing stock in Akron, the majority of which was built before 1905,” Snyder says. “As you move west, the homes get a tiny bit newer.” American Foursquares, both with Craftsman and colonial influences, make up most of the neighborhood, and there are some Queen Annes and traditional homes as well. While most houses are single-family, several have been converted into duplexes. Prices for both typically range from $130,000 to $275,000, although investment properties can cost $25,000 to $80,000.Pocket parks, historic landmarks and the Akron Zoo are nearby
West Hill offers several opportunities to get outdoors. WHNO helps maintain Oakdale Pocket Park, an open field with picnic tables and sculptures made by local artists. Cascade Locks Park is along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and features the Mustill Store Museum, which details the city’s involvement in the canal. Akron Zoo is about 1 mile away, with over 1,000 animals like the red panda. The Glendale Steps are a notable neighborhood landmark from the Great Depression. WHNO and organizations like Progress through Preservation are working to repair the steps to their original state.Public and private schools in Akron serve West Hill
West Hill is part of the Akron Public Schools district, which offers open enrollment. The program allows students to enroll in schools outside their designated neighborhood school by application. King Community Learning Center earns a B-minus and serves elementary grade levels. Students can also attend the I Promise School, a public institution with first through eighth grades founded by the LeBron James Family Foundation that teaches with a social-emotional framework. It receives a C-minus. High schoolers can attend Firestone Community Learning Center, rated B-minus. Private education options in the area include the A-rated St. Vincent-St Mary’s High School, where LeBron James graduated from.WonderFest is one way the neighborhood promotes multiuse properties
A small section of West Hill, along Crosby and Maple streets, is zoned for multiuse properties. “In that area, you can take a house and do any number of things,” Snyder says. “You can have an art gallery; you can turn it into a restaurant, a law office, a doctor’s office, whatever.” West Hill Neighborhood Organization (WHNO) held the first WonderFest Arts and Music Festival in October 2022 as part of its initiatives to attract more entrepreneurs. Creatives sell their wares at vendor booths, and two stages play live music throughout the day. “They do a lot of great things for the neighborhood,” says Snyder, who previously served on WHNO’s board.Market Street is a main thoroughfare but residents use buses and bikes too
Market Street leads to Downtown Akron and connects with Interstate 77. Akron Metro Regional Transit Authority manages buses across the city. “I think that more people in the West Hill area are likely to hop on a bicycle,” Snyder says. “It seems like the mentality here is to use the least environmentally costly form of transportation possible.” The closest airport is Akron-Canton Airport, about 15 miles away, although many people will travel 42 miles to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.Residents have options for shopping, dining and entertainment
There are a few dining options in the neighborhood, including Good Company. It is known for its chicken wings, which take three days to prepare. Diamond Grille is another popular option known for its steak. At the nearby Highland Square, restaurants and bars like The Matinee are next to the library and the Highland Square Theatre. It also includes Mustard Street Market, although residents can get groceries from Acme, about 3 miles away. In Downtown Akron, people can try one of over 50 eateries. Snyder recommends Crave, a city staple that opened in 2005 and serves culinary twists on comfort food. Target and Home Depot are 5 miles away, while Walmart is about an 8-mile drive.
