Alamo is a small, rural town offering large lots and a small town center
While Alamo was named for an intense battle of the Texas Revolution, the rural Georgia town is relatively low-key. “It’s like Mayberry,” says local Realtor Alicia Day with The Day Group of eXp Realty. She’s sold homes across the region for over six years and regularly visited Alamo growing up. “It’s great for people looking to live a simple, quiet life. For someone who wants to be secluded and get back to the land.” Alamo is one of two small towns in Wheeler County, home to just under 3,000 residents who enjoy large country properties and a quaint town center. It’s home to several houses of worship that engage the community, including Union Springs Baptist Church and Alamo First Baptist Church.
Mid-century ranches on sizable lots
Much of the draw to Alamo is in the land. “If you’re out in the country, there are very little restrictions,” Days says. “If they want chicken coops, which are very popular, they can have them. I had a client who wanted to do archery.” While lots in the heart of town measure around a quarter-acre, most homes sit on at least a couple of acres. Day says it’s a farming community, so many people have 20-plus acres. A 30-acre lot recently sold for $105,000, while a 98-acre tract sold for about $390,000. Alamo mainly features mid-century ranch-style homes, but buyers will also find a mix of split-levels, cottages and bungalows built across the 20th century. The median sale price is around $170,000, lower than the national median.
Wheeler County Schools offers several career and technical education programs
Wheeler County Schools serves nearly 900 students and scores an overall B on Niche. Although all students technically attend the B-rated Wheeler County K-12 school, the district separates them into Wheeler County Elementary School and Wheeler County Middle High School. The middle high school offers several career and technical education programs, including agriculture, food science, forestry and business.
Local leagues and a popular Georgia state park
The Wheeler County Recreation Department operates several recreational sports leagues for kids and adults. The department hosts flag football, baseball and soccer for kids and a co-ed softball league for adults. Leagues play games and tournaments at a sizable sports complex off Snowhill Baptist Church Road near the heart of town. The sports complex features baseball fields, concession stands and a playground. Locals enjoy proximity to Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge. The state park sprawls across 1,360 acres, anchored by a 256-acre lake with a small beach area popular for swimming. The Oak Ridge Trail winds through the state park, offering hikers swamp views and the chance to see the rare gopher tortoise. The park features several picnic shelters, campsites and an amphitheater.
Locally owned restaurants in downtown Alamo
Alamo’s commercial activity is limited to a few stores and a couple of restaurants downtown. Lori’s Dive In is a small restaurant along Commerce Street open for breakfast and dinner, and the takeout boxes at Bulldog Grill are packed with wraps, sandwiches, salads or pizzas. Family Dollar and Dollar General are available downtown, with gas stations and convenience markets. Day says that residents mainly head to nearby towns for additional shopping. Harvey’s Supermarket is available in McRae-Helena, where shoppers can also find a Piggly Wiggly. Walmart Supercenter is about 26 miles away, just east of Vidalia.
Navigating Wheeler County
Alamo is a car-dependent community bisected by U.S. Route 280 and State Route 126. McRae-Helena is about 10 miles west of Alamo, and Glenwood is about 7 miles east. Memorial Health Meadows Hospital, located about 25 miles away, is one of the nearest medical facilities. The Savannah Hilton Head International Airport is one of the closest major airports, about 105 miles east in Savannah. Interstate 16 is accessible a few miles north of the community.
