Doublegate is close to shopping and dining
Doublegate is a quiet, established Albany neighborhood with a private country club serving as its centerpiece. Newcomers are drawn to its upscale, well-maintained homes and proximity to Doublegate Country Club, which features an 18-hole golf course. Ample shopping and dining options are just 3 miles away. “Doublegate is one of the more esteemed neighborhoods in Albany. Homes really hold their value there,” says Marisha Wooten, a broker with Prestige Realty of Southwest Georgia, who’s been selling homes in the area since 2017. “Some of the residents have been there since the community started. There are a lot of retired doctors and lawyers who live there. Most people belong to the country club.”
Doublegate offers roomy homes and lots
Doublegate brims with spacious ranch-style homes and other traditional designs built from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Houses sit far back from quiet streets lined with streetlights. The neatly trimmed yards, sprinkled with mature pines, offer a half-acre or more of space. Properties commonly feature amenities like three-car garages and pools. Prices here range from $300,000 to $500,000. Doublegate's CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Westover High partners with Albany State University
Doublegate is served by the Dougherty County Schools system. Students can attend Live Oak Elementary, Merry Acres Middle and Westover High. The elementary and high schools score C Niche grades, while the middle school has a C-minus rating. Westover High students can earn college credit through a dual enrollment program with Albany State University.
Golf and tennis at Doublegate Country Club
The private Doublegate Country Club, on Old Dawson Road, offers members an 18-hole golf course, pool and tennis courts, as well as a fitness center with a personal trainer on staff. The club also has three on-site restaurants, including The Alfresco, which has views of the ninth and 18th holes.
Just 7 miles west, the Albany Nursery Wildlife Management Area is one of the main spots that locals go for deer, turkey and duck hunting. The 300-acre park is wheelchair accessible for hunters with disabilities. “There are a lot of places to go hunting. I love the country side of it,” says Lauren Watson, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker/Walden & Kirkland and an Albany native. “We’re a city, but it feels like a small town. If you’re from here it feels like you really do know everybody.”
Corks Wine & Charcuterie is a favorite for fine dining
Old Dawson Road runs through Doublegate and a 3-mile trip east on the road leads to familiar retailers like Target, Publix and Dillard’s at Albany Mall. Nearby restaurants include regional chain Newk’s Eatery, on Westover Boulevard, for pizzas and sandwiches. Corks Wine & Charcuterie on Dawson Road is a date night spot, known for its steaks and piano bar atmosphere. “Corks is top tier,” Wooten says. “It’s probably the most delicious fine dining you’ll get in Albany.”
Getting to Albany hot spots
U.S. Route 82, which spans from the Georgia Coast to New Mexico, is north of the neighborhood. Following the highway 10 miles east leads to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, a 691-bed facility. The Southwest Georgia Regional Airport is 9 miles southeast. Downtown is a 7-mile drive via Gillionville Road.
The Combos Marathon & Half Marathon is an anticipated annual event
The Combos Marathon & Half Marathon, formerly known as the Snickers Marathon, draws hundreds of runners from across the country to Albany every March. The race starts on North Front Street downtown and all proceeds go to the Willson Hospice House. “The Snickers Marathon qualifies you for the Boston Marathon. It goes through a lot of neighborhoods in Albany,” Watson says. “It’s really fun. People sit outside their houses and cheer the runners on.”
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
