Lake Park offers convenient living
Home to boutique shops and minutes from major retailers, Albany’s Lake Park is all about convenience. While amenities are close by, there’s no through traffic in the residential area, so the community retains a quiet, peaceful feel. “It’s one of the oldest, most prestigious neighborhoods in our city,” says Vickie Giles-Griffin, a Realtor with Re/Max of Albany, who grew up in Lake Park. “The neighborhood has its own lake where people go fishing and jogging. Park Lake Elementary is right in the neighborhood. No matter where you live, you are just four to six blocks away from the school. I walked to school every day.”
No HOA fees in Lake Park
Lake Park teems with ranch-style homes from the 1950s through the ‘80s that rest along quiet streets. Properties feature roomy lots with more than a quarter-acre of land, dotted by towering loblolly pines. “A lot of those homes have been updated and redone,” says Lauren Watson, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker/Walden & Kirkland, who lives in Albany. “They’re older, but they’re well-maintained.” Prices typically range from $175,000 to $300,000. “There are no HOA fees, which people love,” Giles-Griffen says. Lake Park has a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, slightly lower than the national average of 4.

Shopping on Dawson Road
Lake Park is partially bordered by Dawson Road, a major thoroughfare that leads to familiar chains like Publix, Target and Dillard’s at Albany Mall. However, there are some mom-and-pops right in the neighborhood. At the northern end of Lake Park, locals can pick up homemade soups and boiled peanuts at Tommy Mc’s Produce and freshly baked cookies and cupcakes at The Cakery. Restaurant options in that area include RJ Alverson’s Rib Shack and The Mayberry Diner for Southern comfort food.
Residents of Lake Park can shop at the local Dollar General.

In addition to housing a 2,400-piece art collection, the Albany Museum of Art holds monthly events like Yoga in the Gallery and an after-school art club for kids of all ages. It’s located just south of the neighborhood on Meadowlark Drive. Vendors at the Tift Park Community Market sell everything from po’boys to handmade jewelry. The weekly event also features live music. It takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 4 miles away on North Monroe Street.

Lake Park is home to Lake Park Elementary
Lake Park is served by the Dougherty County Schools district. Public school students can attend the neighborhood’s Lake Park Elementary, which earns a B Niche grade, before moving on to C-minus-rated Merry Acres Middle and C-rated Westover High School. Through a partnership with nearby Albany State University, Westover offers a dual enrollment program that allows students to earn college credits while still in high school.
Outdoor fun at Legacy Park
The neighborhood’s 25-acre Lake Loretta on East Edgewater Drive is a popular spot to jog around the water or feed the ducks. Just north, Sherwood Baptist Church’s Legacy Park on Whispering Pines Road is an 82-acre green space that’s open to the public. It has a playground, tennis courts, a 1.5-mile walking track and a fishing pond.
Residents can enjoy the pavilions at Sherwood Park.

Getting to Albany hotspots
U.S. Route 82, which spans from the Georgia coast to New Mexico, is north of the neighborhood. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, a 691-bed facility, is 4 miles away via Dawson Road, and Phoebe Urgent Care is on Lake Park Drive, right in the neighborhood. Southwest Georgia Regional Airport is 6 miles south. Downtown is a 4-mile drive by way of Dawson Road and Pine Drive. “Nothing is too far from anything in Albany,” Watson says. “That’s one of the great things about living here.”
