Merry Acres offers plenty of land
Ranch homes and Colonial Revivals built from the 1960s through the 1990s are the dominant styles in Merry Acres. Houses sit far back from the narrow streets on spacious lots of nearly an acre. Properties are peppered with towering pine and oak trees strewn with Spanish moss. “All the homes have great bones and nice-sized lots,” Watson says. Prices typically range from $225,000 to $325,000.Hammer Jam fundraiser takes place in the neighborhood
Residents look forward to the annual Hammer Jam fundraiser for Flint River Habitat for Humanity, which features area bands, a beer garden and food trucks. It takes place at the Merry Acres Inn every August. The Tift Park Community Market is a go-to spot to shop for fresh produce and handmade crafts. There’s also live music every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on North Monroe Street, 3 miles away. “It’s a great little farmers market,” Watson says. “They have people there cooking pizzas.”Shopping and dining on Dawson Road
On the eastern border of Merry Acres is Dawson Road, home to Publix at Albany Square and retail options like Dillard's and Belk at Albany Mall. Dawson Road is one of the city's main thoroughfares. “We have some great restaurants around there," says Vickie Giles-Griffin, a Realtor with Re/Max of Albany, who grew up in the area. "Bianca’s is an Italian place on Dawson Road. It’s the greatest thing we’ve got. The Catch is another one right off Dawson. It has really good seafood.” The Manor House Pub at Merry Acres Inn serves as a social hub for the neighborhood along that strip. The popular bar and restaurant has double-decker porches and outdoor seating. "You can order sandwiches and stuff,” Watson says. “People go there after work for drinks or to play cornhole. You can become a member and use the pool at the inn.”Swimming, pickleball and exercise classes at the Albany YMCA
Baldwin Park, on Baldwin Drive, offers a playground for the kids to play right in the neighborhood. The Albany YMCA, on Gillionville Road, has a heated indoor pool, an outdoor track, and courts for basketball, racquetball, pickleball and tennis. It also holds more than 60 weekly fitness classes ranging from yoga to water aerobics.Southwest Georgia Regional Airport is close by
U.S. Route 82, which spans from the Georgia coast to New Mexico, is north of the neighborhood. Downtown is a 3-mile drive via Dawson Road and Pine Drive. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, a 691-bed facility, is 3 miles away on Third Avenue. Southwest Georgia Regional Airport is 5 miles south. “The traffic is wonderful in Albany. You don’t have to deal with all the congestion,” Giles-Griffin says. “That’s one of my favorite things about living here.”Westover High School preps students for the future
Public school students may attend Live Oak Elementary, Merry Acres Middle School and Westover High. Part of the Dougherty County Schools district, the elementary and high schools score C Niche grades, while the middle school has a C-minus rating. Westover offers a dual enrollment program that allows students to earn college credits at Albany State University.
