The leafy views and convenient location of Sherwood

In Sherwood, a small neighborhood just a few miles north of downtown Albany, the quiet streets and leafy views offer a feeling of seclusion. Established in the mid-20th century, Sherwood's main appeal outside of its quiet nature is its proximity to everyday convenience. One of Albany's most significant shopping areas is just outside the community, with the Albany Mall anchoring everything in the center. It's less than 3 miles from the Albany State University West Campus and is home to Sherwood Baptist Church, one of the city's largest houses of worship. With a healthy blend of homeowners and renters, Sherwood has gained popularity as a mixed-income neighborhood.

Sherwood's low property taxes and classic ranch homes

Brick ranch homes, split-levels and minimal traditional styles surrounded by native flora line the streets of Sherwood. Most of the homes were built in the mid-to-late 20th century. There are some houses that need restoration, but many have been well-kept or renovated. While properties certainly list for sale, it's even more common to see rental listings, as Sherwood is only a few miles from Albany State University West Campus. "Established neighborhoods are typically tree-lined and quiet. It makes everything feel less city-like," says Yvette Fields, Albany’s assistant city manager of Administration. "The city owns the utility provider, which makes it easier to keep property taxes low." There is slight architectural variation, so prices don't fluctuate much. Homes usually sell between $150,000 and $200,000. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6, higher than the national average of 4.

Athletics at Westover High School

Sherwood is under the Dougherty County School System, and many local kids will start their education at Sherwood Acres Elementary, which gets a C-minus on Niche. Students head to Merry Acres Middle before going to Westover High. Both schools have C-ratings on Niche. The high school received an A-minus grade for its diverse athletics offerings. Sherwood is only 3 miles from the Albany State University West Campus, one of the city's largest employers and the newest branch of the university.

Using routes 19 and 82 to navigate Albany

U.S. routes 19 and 82 are considered the major thoroughfares for getting around and outside the city. Southwest Georgia Regional Airport is 7 miles south and flies directly to and from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport via Delta. Just 4 miles west is the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, the city's largest medical center. RaShaunda L. Muldrow, an Albany native and owner of The Real Estate Concierge, says many people relocate to Albany to work for Phoebe Putney and that Albany State University runs many programs through its medical centers.

Sherwood Park is a community gathering space

Sherwood Park is in the middle of the neighborhood and within walking and biking distance for most residents. It has a playground, basketball courts and a multiuse recreational field; its pavilion is often used for small outdoor gatherings by its neighbor, Sherwood Baptist Church. Three miles away is Tift Park, the oldest park in the city. It features extensive walking trails, updated tennis courts, and on Saturdays, it's the site of the Tift Park Community Market where vendors sell local produce, artisanal crafts and specialty goods.

Heading to the shops and restaurants around Albany Mall

Albany's most prominent commercial and business area, anchored by the Albany Mall, is just a couple miles from Sherwood. It's a hub for everything from entertainment, like movie theaters and shops, to practical needs, such as urgent care centers. Here, residents will find daily errand stops like Sam's Club, Lowe's and Publix, alongside several other national retailers. There's also a handful of both countrywide and international restaurant chains. However, Sherwood has plenty of eateries that are uniquely Albany, including the upscale Italian menu at Bianca's.
