A small neighborhood alongside the Port of Albany
A railroad track splits the residential and industrial regions of Mount Hope, a small community on the southern outskirts of Albany. The cluster of townhouses lining Mount Hope Drive and Garland Court contrast with the neighborhood's eastern portion, where the Port of Albany sits on the banks of the Hudson River. “A lot of this area is industrial,” says Lorenzo Murray, a New York State licensed associate real estate broker with HUNT Real Estate. “I think a consumer needs to know that it’s residential up against industrial, and that the area is, for the most part, limited to townhouse-style homes. It’s just not a revitalized area.”
Residents with a car can easily hop on Interstates 87 or 787, which are close to the neighborhood, and downtown Albany is about 2 miles north. Mount Hope’s housing prices are below the city’s median price of about $285,000; the comparative affordability and the nearby highway access serve as draws for residents. “It gives you convenience and access to other areas to shop,” Murray says.

Few parks nearby, but a major rail trail winds through Mount Hope
On the Normans Kill, which winds its way along parts of the western and southern edges of the Mount Hope neighborhood, residents can be found fishing, kayaking or simply observing wildlife. Mount Hope Park offers a playground, basketball court and open space for visitors. Krank Park sits just north, in the Second Avenue neighborhood, and is a community gathering spot for the area in addition to featuring several sports facilities and a play area. The Christian Plumeri Sports Complex also sits to the north.
Despite the Hudson River’s proximity, the stretch of water along Mount Hope isn’t a prime spot for getting outdoors. “The Hudson is not a site for recreation in that section,” says Jessica Baxter, a licensed real estate salesperson with the Core Real Estate Team. “The river is going to be where the Port of Albany is. It’s a major hub for wind turbines, which are coming in and out very consistently.” However, the Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail begins around the port and runs for almost 10 miles up to Voorheesville, tracing the Delaware & Hudson Railroad.

Shopping and dining to the south down Route 9W
Though several chain restaurants sit within the Mount Hope neighborhood, residents typically head elsewhere to find places to eat and stores to browse. “People go down into Belmont for shopping,” Murray says. “You drive down 9W into Belmont, and that’s where all your shopping is.” Less than 3 miles south, a shopping center has a Walmart, Lowe’s and PetSmart. About 3 miles south of Mount Hope, several shopping plazas sit centered around a roundabout linking Route 9W with Feura Bush Road. Grocery shoppers often head to a Market 32 in the Town Squire Plaza, and diners can find food nearby, like ice cream at 16 Handles or Japanese fare at Akira Albany or ice cream at 16 Handles. Sawa Sushi Grill and Romo’s Pizza offer international dishes on the west side of Route 9W, complemented by the Glenmont Plaza shopping center.
