North Albany-Shaker Park's industrial past informs residential present
North Albany-Shaker Park is a modestly priced neighborhood on the northeast side of Albany. Originally constructed in the 1600s, this neighborhood has seen significant development in its lifetime. Many previously industrial buildings have recently been converted into luxury lofts and apartments, laying the foundations for a revitalized residential district. “It’s becoming a very desirable area,” says Christopher Wright, associate broker with Oxford Property Group, who has been in the area for 24 years. “It’s in a good school district, it’s very walkable and it’s right by downtown.” While the neighborhood is still budding, North Albany-Shaker Park is quickly making a name for itself.

A mix of historic single-family homes and newer townhouses
Industrial properties take up most of the eastern part of this mixed-use neighborhood, while older single-family homes populate the west side. While many row houses were built prior to 1925, there are pockets of newer townhouses with driveways and multi-car garages. The historic properties come with pros and cons. Spaciousness is an advantage of being built when houses were expected to house large families - prospective homebuyers can find six-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot homes. However, many of these require repairs to be move-in ready. Newer townhouses built in 2018 require far less work but are not as readily available, ranging in price from around $430,000 to $450,000. Single-family homes come in Colonial, Modern Traditional and ranch-style varieties, costing anywhere from $275,000 to $610,000, depending on build year, number of bedrooms and square footage.

Residents can shop for groceries and household necessities at the Family Dollar on Broadway or can make the drive to Honest Weight Food Co-op, a community-owned grocery store specializing in locally sourced produce. Although downtown Albany is just under 2 miles away, locals do not need to leave the neighborhood for a night out. Il Faro is a family-owned Italian restaurant known as a spot for celebrations. The community is also close to a section of Albany’s Brewers Row, where locals can gather at pubs like Fort Orange Brewing and Druthers Brewing Company.
