A neighborhood by the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course
Bear Canyon is north of the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course. When translated from Spanish, Arroyo del Oso means "canyon of the bear." Similar names are used for other neighborhoods and sites in the area, which is part of Albuquerque's Northeast Heights. To the west is Interstate 25, which provides convenient travel and commuting access. Views of the Sandia Mountains are a local highlight. There are several shopping centers within walking distance of Bear Canyon homes. "The Northeast Heights is one of the most sought-after areas because it has a sterling reputation for schools. It's just been prestigious for so long," says Dagna Altheide, an associate broker with Realty One of New Mexico.
The golf course, community parks and events
The municipal Arroyo del Oso Golf Course has been in operation since 1965 and has a driving range and a café. Paired with the course, Arroyo del Oso Park is home to a playground, soccer fields and trail access. One of the city's Christmas Eve Balloon Glows, featuring hot-air balloons and luminarias, is held here.Sister Cities Park, about a mile west, has tennis and soccer facilities and a playground. In June, a few miles north of Bear Canyon, North Domingo Baca Park hosts the Heights Summerfest, part of the city's concert series.
Ranch-style, contemporary and Pueblo-style homes
Bear Canyon has contemporary, Pueblo-style and ranch-style homes. Many date to the 1970s, though there are some from subsequent decades. Driveways and multicar garages are standard, and some homes have private pools, covered patios and courtyards. Due to the neighborhood's small size, the number of home listings can be limited. Over a year, homes sold in the low $300,000s to the high $600,000s, with square footage affecting prices. Townhouses are on the lower end of the range.
North Towne Plaza and Sycamore Plaza for shopping
In Southeast Bear Canyon, there's the North Towne Plaza shopping center. Stores in the area include a Whole Foods Market, HomeGoods, LOFT and Fleet Feet Albuquerque, a running store. Restaurants include 5 Star Burgers and Noodle Works. On the other side of Academy Road Northeast is Sycamore Plaza shopping center, a Smith's grocery store and a Walmart Supercenter. A short distance up Wyoming Boulevard Northeast is the Cherry Hills Public Library, which offers activities like chess club, book groups and writing time. Children's programming ranges from Crafty Club and cooking classes to Read to the Dogs, which has trained therapy dogs in the audience.
Albuquerque Public Schools zones split east and west
Public school zoning is split into sections east and west of Truchas Drive Northeast. Zoned for the east side, Osuna Elementary School earns an A-minus grade from Niche, and Madison Middle School and Sandia High School both receive A grades. For the west side, Arroyo del Oso Elementary School earns a B grade from Niche. Cleveland Middle School receives a B-plus and Del Norte High School has a B. Albuquerque Public Schools also has district-wide magnet schools. "There's also a really great group of private schools," Altheide says. Among a half dozen private schools in the area, Albuquerque Academy and Oak Grove Classical Academy both have A-plus grades from Niche
Bear Canyon is walkable, and highways are nearby
Bear Canyon is a walkable community with sidewalks. Academy Road, adjacent to the golf course, has bike lanes. West of the neighborhood is I-25 and the parallel Pan American Freeway. About 2 miles north of the neighborhood, state Route 423, also called Paseo del Norte Boulevard, runs east-west. Free bus rides are available with the city's system, ABQ RIDE, which has stops on Academy Road and Wyoming Boulevard. It's about 9 miles to downtown Albuquerque and the Alvarado Transportation Center, southwest of Bear Canyon. Commuters can travel from downtown on Rio Metro's New Mexico Rail Runner Express. Amtrak is also available. Albuquerque International Sunport is about 12 miles southwest of Bear Canyon.
Attractions like Sandia Peak and Balloon Fiesta Park
With the mountains nearby, hiking and other outdoor activities are popular pastimes. It's about 8 miles from Bear Canyon to Sandia Peak Tramway, the longest aerial tramway in the Americas. In the winter, skiers head to Sandia Crest. Albuquerque's most famous event, the International Balloon Fiesta, is held in October at Balloon Fiesta Park, about 6 miles northwest of Bear Canyon. The park also hosts various other events year-round.
