Midcentury architecture and suburban charm in Highlands North

Highlands North is a suburban neighborhood in northeast Albuquerque, developed primarily during the city’s population boom in the 1950s and 1960s. “It’s a small midcentury community that’s near the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course,” says Austin Wolff, real estate broker with The Lovely Home Company. “It’s very centrally located, just a quiet suburban kind of community with quick access to pretty much everything in the city.” Montgomery Boulevard, which forms the southern boundary of the neighborhood, is lined with businesses and apartment buildings, providing a connection to the interstate and the bustle of the city. But the quiet, tree-lined streets of Highlands North provide locals with a comfortable retreat.

Midcentury brick and stucco houses near the golf course

The winding streets of Highlands North are mainly residential, although apartment buildings, shops, restaurants and offices line Montgomery Boulevard. The northern part of the neighborhood, which backs up on the Arroyo del Oso golf course, is populated mostly with ranch-style homes with either brick or Southwestern stucco siding. “Most of the neighborhood is going to be midcentury builds, so you’ll get those nice, interesting Midcentury Modern designs,” Wolff explains. Many front yards have been xeriscaped to accommodate drought-resistant plants, but others prominently feature topiaries, green grass and shade trees. Backyards are often large enough to accommodate in-ground pools or patios. Prices typically range from $270,000 to $850,000, varying based on square footage, build year, lot size and number of bedrooms.

Arroyo del Oso Golf Course is just north of the neighborhood

Although Novella Park, which features a small playground and a shaded green space, is nearby, many residents will likely be drawn to the more extensive facilities just north of the neighborhood. “The Arroyo Del Oso golf course is a big draw for people who like outdoor recreation,” Wolff says. “And there’s also Arroyo del Oso Park right there, so really, access to that community’s amenities is going to be big for anyone buying in Highlands North.” The golf course, which opened in 1965, offers 27 holes, and the park is home to several tennis courts, an outdoor basketball court, a small playground and an open field.

Transit options and highways connect residents to the city

Surface streets like Louisiana Boulevard, Montgomery Boulevard and Osuna Road are often the most efficient ways to get around town. ABQ Ride transit buses make frequent stops along Montgomery, connecting locals to Downtown Albuquerque in just under an hour. Residents who prefer to drive also have access to the region’s main north-south highway. “The neighborhood is close to Interstate 25, so commuting is pretty simple,” Wolff says. I-25 is the most direct route south to Interstate 40 and the Albuquerque International Sunport.
