Huning Castle is an upscale suburb near city attractions
Huning Castle is an upscale Albuquerque suburb named for a 19th-century mansion that once stood on 700 acres of farmland. Today, the neighborhood is close to some of the city's main attractions, such as ABQ BioPark, Old Town and downtown. "[It's a] very lovely neighborhood, walkable to a ton of restaurants," says Max Maner, a relatively new Realtor with BHHS New Mexico Properties. Huning Castle is also sometimes called the "country club area" as it's also just next door to the Albuquerque Country Club. Aside from location, Maner says the overall condition of the homes is a key draw. "A couple of the homes have been featured in really popular TV shows like 'Breaking Bad' and 'Better Call Saul'."

The neighborhood's homes are diverse in type and style
The neighborhood is mainly filled with single-family homes. Architecture is diverse, offering a mix of adobe, Spanish Revival, midcentury modern, Southwestern and ranch-style styles. Oak and evergreen varieties spring from yards filled with pebbles, shrubs or grass. Prices generally range from $294,000 to $500,000, but they can go over $1 million. “The main thing [determining value] is condition and size,” Maner says. Homebuyers can also find condos and townhouses that range from around $150,000 to $470,000. Though some townhouses head into the $700,000s as they get larger.

Forest Park and Oxnard Park are small, passive green spaces in Huning Castle filled with benches, trees and flowers. Rio Grande Park is along the neighborhood's southwestern side with a playground, catch-and-release pond and dog park. The park is across from a large cottonwood forest interwoven with trails. Hikers can follow the trails north to Tingley Beach, which, while not an actual beach, offers access points to the Rio Grande and more fishing ponds also used for sailing model boats and paddling. Tingley Beach is a part of ABQ BioPark, a huge Albuquerque attraction that draws around 1.5 million visitors annually. The park also encompasses an aquarium, a 64-acre zoo and a botanic garden showcasing plants of the Southwest and other arid climates. Events are hosted in the park’s various sections throughout the year, such as family picnic nights at the botanic garden to “Boo at the Zoo” in October.

Old Town and downtown Albuquerque are within a mile of Huning Castle. Sunday Bagels, Vinaigrette salad shop and the Dog House Drive In hot dog stand are some of the first stops outside the neighborhood. The eateries spread out along Central Avenue, the gateway to the rest of downtown, which is packed with restaurants and bars. The Pueblo-deco KiMo Theatre is along that road and has been a staple of the downtown area since the late 1920s. Old Town is centered around the Spanish Colonial San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church and a hub of independent eateries and businesses that support the arts. Church Street Cafe serves classic New Mexican fare crafted from family recipes in an early 18th-century building. Blackstone and The Silver Artichoke sell handmade goods sourced from local Indigenous communities. For groceries, Silver Street Market is also within a mile.
