Princess Jeane is a well-established neighborhood planned in the 1950s

Well-established and conveniently located only minutes from Interstate 40, shopping and dining, the Princess Jeanne neighborhood has been attracting homebuyers for seven decades. Envisioned in the 1950s as an area of affordable housing, Princess Jeanne was developed by Dale Bellamah and named for his beloved wife. Geared toward young families and newlyweds, the 300-acre community of 1,600 homes touted modern-at-the-time appliances and technologies like washing machines, electric ranges and garbage disposals, and new products like linoleum and Formica. Buyers could choose from about a dozen models of homes with names like The Countess, The Baroness and The Lady and customize each property’s size, layout and amenities. To appeal to the most buyers, Bellamah designed the neighborhood to include everything from modern to Pueblo architecture. Garages, front and center on most homes, reflected the era’s growing reliance on cars.

Updated storybook ranch homes from the 1950s

Today, homes in Princess Jeanne lack the polish of new construction but retain many architectural details found so appealing in the 1950s. Among the prevalent adobe and red brick are gems called “storybook ranch” houses — ranch-style homes embellished with “fairy-tale” elements like long roof overhangs. Look closely and you’ll discover these architectural mashups throughout the neighborhood. Homebuyers attracted to Princess Jeanne will find mostly three-bedroom homes averaging 1,600 square feet. Expect to pay about $250,000 for an updated property on a desert-landscaped lot. For a newer, low-maintenance build, you can snap up a three-bedroom, 1,700-square-foot town house with a garage for $275,000.

Highly rated Albuquerque public schools

Children living in Princess Jeanne may attend Albuquerque Public Schools, including Tomasita Elementary School and McCollum Elementary School. Onate Elementary School is highly rated by GreatSchools for test scores and academic progress above the state average and earned a coveted A- grade from Niche. Students may go on to attend Jackson Middle School or Kennedy Middle School, which boasts a student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1, well below the national average. Its after-school program promotes good citizenship through activities like rocketry and competitive archery. Older students may attend Manzano High School, whose dozens of clubs and extracurricular activities include Naval JROTC for the military-minded and an outdoor club that centers on hiking and camping. Its competitive athletics program has earned state honors in football and basketball.

Fitness, games and more at the community center

For recreation, Jeanne Bellamah Community Center is a destination. Built in 1954, the covered pavilion hosts after-school programs and community events. The center’s game room is open to the public; challenge some friends to foosball or pool. Residents 18 and older can get a workout at the fitness center, which includes treadmills, weights machines, yoga balls and mats. The center’s computer lab is also open to the public. Outside, find a small playground and a massive grassy field perfect for your favorite ball games.

Shopping at Market Center Crossing and along Juan Tabo Boulevard

Residents in Princess Jeanne live right around the corner from popular stores and restaurants. Head to Market Center Crossing for big-box retailers like Target, Best Buy and Petco. Before shopping, you can fuel up on a hearty breakfast or burger at Owl Café. Locals love its kitschy chrome décor and tabletop jukeboxes. Across the parking lot, Sadie’s, known for its house specialty enchiladas and excellent service, will satisfy your craving for Mexican fare. A mile east, Juan Tabo Boulevard is a bustling shopping and dining corridor. For more options, jump on I-40 to open up the city and beyond.
