San Gabriel is near highly rated schools and Sandia foothill trails
San Gabriel is a small square of residential streets in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights. Homes are about 3 miles from trailheads that venture into the rugged foothills of the Sandia Mountains, covered in shrubs of oak and Apache plume that all but blend into the sandy terrain. “It’s a very sought-after neighborhood. It’s a very popular zip code,” says Alma Saul, a Realtor with eXp Realty who has about 12 years of experience, referring to the 87111 zip code the neighborhood belongs to. “It has good schools and it’s near the foothills.”
Modern and ranch-style homes with xeriscaping throughout San Gabriel
Wide sidewalks pass front lawns with thoughtful xeriscaping — and some with small plots of grass — in San Gabriel. Ranch-style homes and those with unique, modern architecture from the 1960s and early 1970s fetch between $315,000 and $575,000. Some of the ranch-style houses in the neighborhood have red-brick exteriors, while others are constructed from slump block, a popular building material throughout the Southwest. Lots go up to a third of an acre in size, and some homes come with shaded patios and in-ground pools in the backyard.
Humanities and career technical education at Eldorado High School
Children in San Gabriel may begin their K-12 journeys at Mitchell Elementary School, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche, before moving forward to Hoover Middle School, scoring a B-plus. A-rated Eldorado High School has an extensive offering of humanities courses, like Bible literature, philosophy and film criticism. It maintains nine career and technical education pathways — including transportation, distribution and logistics, as well as architecture and construction — and students can choose from more than 40 extracurricular clubs.
Pelican’s, Whole Hog Café and a Western bar in northwest San Gabriel
Northwest San Gabriel is home to several popular restaurants. The Whole Hog Café has been serving Memphis-style, pecan-smoked barbecue for over 15 years. What started out as a concession trailer in Little Rock, Arkansas, has evolved into an established eatery with locations in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Next door, fresh seafood is delivered to Pelican’s several times a week. Popular orders include sushi-grade ahi tuna, Alaskan king crab legs and Chilean seabass, which can be paired with one of Pelican’s several martini options.
A few storefronts away, The Dirty Bourbon Dance Hall & Saloon captures the spirit of the Wild West with a barn-themed interior and staff wearing old-fashioned costumes. Live music, a dance floor, pool tables and shuffleboard keep guests entertained between rounds. An Albertsons Market is about 2 miles to the southeast, while Trader Joe’s is on the opposite side of the neighborhood.
Community parks and green spaces surround San Gabriel
A spacious green field next to Mitchell Elementary School provides a space to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Northeast of the neighborhood, Hahn Park has six baseball diamonds, while Aztec Park is comprised of six tennis courts, two playgrounds and a swing set southwest of San Gabriel. The walking paths of Loma Del Ray Park weave under towering, mature trees that morph into a spectrum of gold during the fall.
Near Tramway Boulevard and Interstate 25, which leads toward downtown
San Gabriel is sandwiched between Montgomery Boulevard to the north and Comanche Road to the south. Both intersect Tramway Boulevard, also known as New Mexico state Route 566, and Interstate 25. The former is one of the main thoroughfares on the east side of the city, while the latter leads toward downtown Albuquerque, roughly 10 miles away.
On the west side of the neighborhood, Eubank Boulevard leads south to some of the city’s biggest employers. “It’s near most of the established jobs, like the Air Force base, the hospitals and Sandia Labs. That’s pretty big in Albuquerque,” Saul says. The ABQ Ride bus system maintains one route along Eubank Boulevard and another that stops on Montgomery Boulevard, dropping passengers off downtown.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
