Snow Heights has classic homes surrounded by contemporary amenities
Snow Heights residents describe their slice of Albuquerque as “a midcentury neighborhood for the modern family.” It’s a moniker that fits, says local Realtor Barbara Maddox. This area’s 1950s homes are a short drive from multiple shopping centers, numerous restaurants and Interstate 40, and residents are within walking distance of two parks. Still, homes are relatively affordable, selling for less than the city average. “It is centrally located, so when you live there you’re 10 minutes from everywhere except far off Rio Rancho,” says Maddox, a New Mexico native with Albuquerque-based Maddox & Co. Realtors.

Established homes still present modern potential
Maddox says this neighborhood was built for employees of Sandia National Laboratories. “It was like the modern little, all-American neighborhood,” Maddox says. Sandia, a company that applies technology to national security, was Albuquerque’s largest employer in the 1950s and is still a top employer. Three-quarters of a century later, many houses are still in relatively good condition. “Because they were mostly owner-occupied,” Maddox says. “And the ones that weren’t were well maintained by the renters or property managers.” Pueblo is the predominant architectural style around Snow Heights, and many homes come with one-car garages attached. Most properties sell for between $300,000 and $400,000.

Whether Winrock Town Center or Wyoming Mall, attractions are aplenty
A wide selection of restaurants and shopping centers are within 2 miles of Snow Heights. “There’s shopping of every kind,” Maddox says. “Grocery shopping, clothes shopping, miscellaneous shopping.” Some on the neighborhood's west side are close enough to walk to the Winrock Town Center, where there’s Dillard’s, Nordstrom Rack, T.J. Maxx and a movie theater. ABQ Uptown across Indian School Road has Apple, Gap, lululemon and The North Face, while the Coronado Center up the street features Dick’s Sporting Goods, Foot Locker and Macy’s. A Walmart Supercenter anchors the Wyoming Mall shopping center. The Integrity Plaza shopping center includes multiple well-liked local restaurants, like Eloy’s and Thai Tip. Eloy’s is a Mexican restaurant whose sopapillas are popular, and Thai Tip is known in part for its mango sweet rice dessert.

Heights Summerfest brings music to this side of Albuquerque
One of the annual traditions not far from this neighborhood is the Heights Summerfest. “They have food trucks, they have bands,” Maddox says. “It is pretty popular.” Summerfest is free and takes place each June at North Domingo Baca Park, 6 miles north of Snow Heights.

Namesake park is a resource for locals
Residents enjoy being close to Snow Heights Park, a 2-acre green space on the neighborhood's south side. “They have an Easter egg hunt there every year, and [people have] picnics on the weekends,” Maddox says. The park has a covered playground as well. Taylor Park is another area option, closer to those who live on Snow Heights’ north side and full of tall shade trees.

Interstate 40 is in residents’ backyards
Snow Heights’ homes are just off the thoroughfare of Wyoming Boulevard, which has a ramp to Interstate 40. Still, residents aren’t bothered by noise or exorbitant traffic, Maddox says. Downtown Albuquerque is 8 miles away using I-40. The highway connects to I-25 for drives to the Albuquerque International Sunport, a 10-mile trip. Wyoming Boulevard also has multiple ABQ RIDE bus stops and is home to the 85-bed Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital.
