The Heights
Quarter-acre lots and mountain views
The sidewalk-lined residential streets of The Heights slope up toward the foothills, and terracing helps give the houses here views of the mountains and the city. “You’re close to the mountains,” says Sally Machacek, a lifelong Albuquerque resident and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty, “so even if you don’t have an incredible view, you can probably see a little bit of the mountains.” While the homes here are surrounded by nature, quarter-acre lots with xeriscaped yards keep the high desert’s flora close to home, and animals like mule deer often wander through the area. Ranch-style homes built in the 1970s and ‘80s are common in the neighborhood’s west, and a three-bedroom can range in price from $260,000 to $550,000. Custom homes built in the ‘90s with Pueblo and Spanish influences are more common in the east; these can start at $435,000 for a three-bedroom, while a five-bedroom with sunset views can cost around $1.1 million.Model United Nations at Eldorado High
Local kids can start school at Oñate Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche, then attend the B-rated Hoover Middle. At the A-rated Eldorado High, which has appeared on television’s “Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul” and “Stranger Things," students can join over 35 after-school organizations, including the Mountain Bike Club, Model United Nations and STEM Club. Nearby private options include the A-plus-rated Eastern Hills Christian Academy for pre-kindergarten through Grade 8, and the A-minus-rated Calvary Christian Academy for pre-kindergarten through Grade 12.Hike into the Sandia Foothills Open Space
Most residents of The Heights are within walking distance of trails that lead into the Sandia Foothills Open Space, a 2,650-acre area along the neighborhood’s west side that’s popular for hiking and mountain biking. Paths like the 6-mile Embudo Trail and 2-mile Piedra Lisa Canyon Loop Trail take hikers deep into the foothills where they can see views of the city, blooming desert flowers and unusual rock formations. The Tramway Trail, a paved path that runs parallel to major thoroughfare Tramway Boulevard, is a flatter area for jogging and biking. “It’s a popular spot,” Machacek says. “Most people use it for recreation and training, but I know people who use it to get to work.”Pocket parks are also found throughout the neighborhood, including the 3-acre Piedra Lisa Park, where kids can burn off some energy on the playground while parents relax in the shade. Pups can run around off-leash at the 4-acre Canine Skyline Dog Park, and the 5-acre Embudo Hills Park has a playground, basketball court and walking trail popular for dog walks.
IPAs at Boxing Bear Brewing Company
Boxing Bear Brewing Company in the neighborhood’s north is a popular weekend hangout on Tramway Boulevard; known for IPAs and pale ales like the Uppercut IPA and Headlock Hazy IPA, the brewery hosts events like trivia nights and paint parties. To the south, Canteen Taproom serves up more local beers and has trivia every Monday. For dinner, Tako Ten is known for its battered fish tacos topped with slaw and crema. Juan Tabo Boulevard to the neighborhood’s west has fast-food dining options, as well as stores like Big 5 Sporting Goods and Hobby Lobby. Grocery options include Smith’s and Sprouts Farmers Market.East of Tramway Boulevard
Interstate 40 in the neighborhood’s south leads 12 miles west to downtown Albuquerque. “If you get on I-40, it's pretty easy to get downtown,” Machecek says. “Even though it might seem far, you don’t have to cross the river, so if there’s a traffic accident, you can get off and take the side streets or other main streets to get to work.” Tramway Boulevard, the neighborhood’s main road, borders its western edge. The ABQ RIDE bus stops in the neighborhood’s south. Multi-use paths, including the Tramway Trail and I-40 Trail, make it easy for cyclists to get around the city. Sidewalks make the area friendly for dog walks and evening strolls, but most residents drive or bike to nearby stores and restaurants. Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital is 4 miles west, and Albuquerque International Sunport Airport is a 15-mile trip.A view of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
The nine-day Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the city’s biggest event. While The Heights is 13 miles away from Balloon Fiesta Park, residents here can avoid the crowds by hiking to viewpoints in the Sandia Foothills Open Space to watch as colorful hot air balloons float through the October sky.
