Vintage ranch homes reign in Briarwood
Briarwood teems with ranch-style homes from the 1960s and ‘70s. Lots with more than a quarter acre of land are peppered with mature oak trees. Properties rest beside quiet residential streets lined with sidewalks and streetlights. “Most of the homes have two-car garages,” Lemoine says. “Some have carports.” Prices typically range from $250,000 to $300,000. “I’d say about half of the homes there have been renovated,” Lemoine says.
Briarwood’s ranch homes are popular for their functional design and easy upkeep.

MacArthur Drive serves as a hub for shopping and dining
Along MacArthur Drive, there are familiar restaurant chains like Domino’s Pizza, Taco Bell and Firehouse Subs. Downtown is where anticipated annual events like The Louisiana Elvis Festival and the Fall ArtWalk take place. The Fall ArtWalk is held in late October and features artisan vendors, food trucks and live music at the mini park at Third and Murray streets. The Louisiana Elvis Festival is a three-day event in April that spotlights multiple Elvis tribute performers from around the country at the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center.
Bolton High preps students for the future
Briarwood is served by the Rapides Public Schools district. Public school students go to J.B. Nachman Elementary, Alexandria Magnet Middle and Bolton High. The elementary school scores a B-plus Niche grade, the middle school is rated C-plus and the high school earns a B-minus. Home of the Bears, Bolton High offers dual enrollment opportunities with Louisiana State University of Alexandria.

Walking trails and a playground at Compton Park
A mile away on Wakefield Boulevard, residents can get their steps in or go for a jog on the paved trails at Compton Park. There’s also a playground and plenty of open green space at the park for kids to run around. For a game of golf or tennis, the public nine-hole Historic Bringhurst Golf Course and the Alexandria Tennis Complex with eight outdoor courts are just 3 miles away along Masonic Drive.

Louisiana Highway 28 follows the neighborhood’s northern border, allowing residents to easily get around the city. Downtown is a 5-mile drive east along that stretch of road. Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, a 241-bed facility, is 3 miles away on Masonic Drive. The Alexandria International Airport is 5 miles northwest. While Alexandria is car-dependent, congestion isn’t an issue. “It’s not so busy,” says Adele Sylvia, a Realtor with Rhodes Realty and a longtime area resident. “I don’t like dealing with traffic and the hustle and bustle of a big city. For me, there’s just enough here.”
