Three miles away on Masonic Drive, there’s the public nine-hole Historic Bringhurst Golf Course and the Alexandria Zoological Park. The zoo is home to 500 animals and at Christmastime it holds its annual Holiday Light Safari, featuring illuminated animal displays and thousands of Christmas lights.

Alexandria residents come together to socialize and support local farmers and artisans at the Alexandria Farmers Market. The event is held every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., two miles from the neighborhood on Jackson Street. In spring, there’s Downtown Rocks, a free music concert series that takes place in front of City Hall. “There are lots of community events in Alexandria,” Walker says. “They’re always having different festivals downtown.”
