Single family homes are abundant in St. Albans.
LIfe at a slower pace
The St. Albans neighborhood surrounds the small village of Alexandria, which came into existence in the 1830s. Houses were built along Main Street that are still around today and attract prospective homebuyers with late 19th-century charm. “A lot of them are still in their original condition with amazing detail and woodwork,” says Brian Kelly, a real estate agent with RE/MAX Connection, Realtors with nearly 20 years of experience. “The surrounding area is growing for those who want a slower pace.”
History or acreage
Driving down Main Street in Alexandria, houses with front porches and classic 19th-century architecture are plentiful, including an 1850 colonial and an 1880 Farmhouse, both with over 2,000 square feet. “There are a certain niche of people who are attracted to homes like that, not necessarily first-time homebuyers,” Kelly says. “With the older homes in town, most of them are in the $300,000 to $350,000 range, depending on the condition. Some may be pushing $400,000, but that’s rare.” A home surrounding the town of Alexandria will be more modern and be on larger lots. A modern contemporary house with almost two acres is close to $900,000 with four bedrooms and over 5,000 square feet of living space. A bi-level that was built in 1957 on 7 acres will be between $500,000 and $600,000. In both areas, the average price per square foot in St. Albans is just over $250.

Plenty of opportunity to eat local
Because barbecue isn’t meant to be clean, Dirty Dawgs BBQ Company is in a small building labeled The Dawg Shack on Main Street in Alexandria. It’s a Veteran-owned company that started as a mobile food truck and today it’s a quaint building with mainly outdoor seating. With hot dogs, hamburgers and even quesadillas, there’s much more than barbecue. A steamy cup of coffee or a sweet treat is available at Ragamuffins Coffee. Make a meal out of a visit with bagels, soup or a salad. Brownies, muffins and cookies are also available. Homegrown produce and summertime sweet corn can be purchased at Lynd Fruit Farm. Starting in the midsummer, they offer vegetables that have been grown by the area Amish population, including onions, tomatoes and squash. A large selection of grocery items can be purchased at Kroger, 15 minutes away in the town of Pataskala.

Enjoy the fresh air at Parker Community Park in Alexandria.
Hidden away from the main drag
Tucked south of Main Street in the town of Alexandria, there’s plenty of room for a picnic and general outdoor fun at Parker Community Park. There’s a playground, walking trails and a baseball diamond. Finding the entrance to the park is kind of tricky. There is a sign on Main Street that points down a gravel alley that will take you there.

Bedroom community for jobs in the northeast suburbs
The town of Alexandria, with abundant sidewalks, provides a prime opportunity to walk to get around. Living outside the town limits, where there’s more of a rural feel, there are no sidewalks, so having a car is ideal. “Although it takes 25 minutes to get to downtown Columbus, there are many people who work in the technology corridor around New Albany, northeast of Columbus,” Kelly says. Getting to those jobs is about a 15-minute drive.
