Rosemont is a vibrant neighborhood with homes ranging from colonial to bungalos.
One of Alexandria's first suburbs
Rosemont is Alexandria's first planned community. It was developed as a "streetcar suburb" when trolleys trudged along the city's main thoroughfares in the early 1900s. Blue-collar workers would commute from Rosemont to the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria, now a popular art center. Midcentury-style homes rest on modest, grassy lawns in the shadow of thick oak, maple and locust trees, while the George Washington Masonic National Memorial looms overhead a few blocks away. Today, it's even more accessible to Old Town and the greater D.C. area through bike lanes and the Braddock Road and King Street metro stations that border the neighborhood to the northeast and southeast. "Rosemont is a throwback to small-town living," says Bill Scott, a Realtor with Yeonas & Shafram. "It's an idyllic little niche you won't find other places— and it's completely unique to Alexandria."
Rosemont retains much of it's historical charm.
Midcentury homes among Virginia trees
Home values in Rosemont range from $750,000 to $2.25 million, varying by age, remodel status and square footage. Various brick townhouses go up to $1 million, and detached, single-family Cape Cods, American Foursquares and colonial homes run higher. The neighborhood's original bungalows and Craftsman homes from the early 1900s are still present, and Scott says that it's more common to remodel these older homes to retain their look and finish rather than tear them down. Built on the "City Beautiful" urban planning model popular of that era, Rosemont was designed with an aesthetic focus still seen through its thoughtful street layouts, neatly kept lawns and elegant gardens.
Hooff's Run Park 4
Hooffs Run Greenway runs a trail through residential streets
Chinquapin Park & Forest Park is north of Rosemont up King Street and features a playground for children, a rec center with a pool, tennis and basketball courts, and a community garden. The Hooffs Run Park & Greenway is closer to home, a long strip park with a trail that cuts through several townhouse rows, making it steps away from the front doors of many residences. Beach Park is a neighborhood green space with a playground, a large grass field for picnicking or a night under the stars. Further east in Old Town are the attractions along the Waterfront, like history tours detailing the city's 200-year past or sunset cruises along the Potomac River. Folks frequent the Torpedo Factory Art Center, which used to be a munitions plant from 1918 through 1946; the city of Alexandria converted it into a large hub for the arts in the mid-'70s, and many local artists display and sell their pieces to this day. Torpedo Factory also offers summer programs and classes for artists of all ages.

Locals walk down King Street to shop or eat
King Street hosts a corridor of retail shops and dining options that stretches over a mile from Rosemont's eastern edge to the Potomac River. The 100 block of King Street is a pedestrian zone where locals can stroll down and browse the boutiques and restaurants that line each side. There's Lou Lou Boutiques, selling clothing, shoes and accessories, and The Creamery, offering sweet frozen treats since 1984. Residents can shop at the ALDI just south of Eugene Simpson Stadium Park or dine at Matt & Tony's All-Day Kitchen + Bar, serving an all-day brunch and dinner menu with craft cocktails. Just a couple miles up U.S. Route 1, also called Richmond Highway, is Potomac Yard, a retail center with a Best Buy, T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods.

Fanfare in July
Locals head to Oronoco Bay Park in Old Town to celebrate the 4th of July, to eat barbecue, sample beer and watch dazzling fireworks over the Potomac River. Alexandria, being 27 years older than the U.S., also celebrates the city's birthday on July 13th, and comes with live music and more fireworks.
A couple miles to D.C., and walking distance to two metro stations
Rosemont is bordered to the east by Richmond Highway, which can take residents to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in 2 miles or downtown D.C. in 8 miles. Commuters can walk to the Braddock Road or King Street metro stations, which offer Blue and Yellow Line access through D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. There's also the Alexandria Amtrak station for greater rail access, just beside the Washington Masonic Temple. Main roads like King Street and Commonwealth Avenue have either distinct bike lanes or shared lanes, and many Capital Bikeshare stations offer rental bikes within a few blocks of Rosemont.
