A peaceful community in Alexandria
Taylor Run was once filled with farmland, which fed into the city of Alexandria’s exports, but now it’s a laidback residential community near Old Town. “Alexandria has more of a sense of history to it than cities like Fairfax and Arlington,” says Mark Frieden, a Realtor with the My Move DMV Team at eXp Realty who’s lived in Alexandria most of his life. The neoclassical George Washington Masonic National Memorial towers over the southeastern corner of Taylor Run, and proximity to the bustling historic Old Town anchors the neighborhood to its historic roots. Residents tend to stay in the area for a while and actively foster connections in the neighborhood through their seasonal events and a community garden. “They have a neighborhood association where you don’t have to pay anything to join. It’s an all-volunteer group with a board that organizes events at the parks, so there’s a good sense of community,” Frieden adds. The area’s parks and green spaces make for a peaceful atmosphere, though commuters are only 9 miles from the nation’s capital.

Colonials and townhouses on tree-lined streets
While there are some streets with shops, residential roads fill most of the neighborhood. “A lot of the duplexes were built around the 1950s between East and West Taylor Run Parkway, and there are some detached homes around there, too,” Frieden says. Duplexes usually cost around $500,000 to $700,000. Some brick condos from the 1970s are priced between $330,000 and $430,000, while colonial-inspired townhouses built in the 1980s cost between $700,000 and $900,000. The rest of Taylor Run’s residential streets are filled with single-family colonials — while most are Colonial Revivals, some are Colonials from the 1770s. Prices for these single-family homes start around $1.2 million and rise to $1.7 million.

Residents head to Old Town for popular restaurants and boutiques
Alexandria Commons Shopping Mall has some stores and chain restaurants in the neighborhood, including Glory Days Grill, a sports bar serving beer and American fare in a casual setting. There’s also a Halal Guys, where locals stop in for platters with pita bread, beef gyro and rice. Giant makes for quick and convenient grocery trips. For more iconic local restaurants, residents can head to Old Town Alexandria to browse the local eateries that line King Street. “You really think of the waterfront restaurants in Old Town. BARCA Pier and Wine Bar has an outdoor patio with heaters, and you can get wine and small plates,” Frieden says. Another popular spot for elevated seafood and steak is Ada's on the River, where residents can take in views of the Potomac. Locals stay in Old Town if they want to flip through the racks at trendy boutiques like 3 Sisters and The Lucky Knot, but there are also big box stores like Target about 3 miles south of Taylor Run.

The Taylor Run Citizens Association, which voted to make membership free in 2024 to encourage further community engagement, organizes seasonal events. Residents can dive into spring cleaning and decluttering just in time for the neighborhood-wide yard sale, which is held in April. In August, neighbors can meet the first responders who serve their community while enjoying food and games during National Night Out, and Taylor Run ushers in a new season with the annual fall party. The party is complete with a costume contest, a raffle and free food and activities.

Pools, tennis courts and a community garden at Chinquapin Park
The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center is the neighborhood’s hub for recreation, where kids learn to swim at the aquatics center, locals exercise in the gym and play pickup games on the outdoor basketball courts. Residents can also meet for after-work tennis matches or relax at the picnic pavilion as their kids run around the playground. Short nature trails make for peaceful wooded hikes, and the neighborhood comes together to cultivate an organic community garden. Locals can rent an individual garden plot at the Chinquapin Organic Gardens to grow their own fruit, flowers and veggies; they may even earn an award for “best flower garden,” “best garden design,” or “best vegetable garden” at the end of the season. Angel Park is another public green space with a playground, basketball courts and a baseball diamond for little league games.

Career learning pathways at Alexandria City High
Kids may begin at Douglas MacArthur Elementary, which has a B-minus rating from Niche, and progress to George Washington Middle, which has a B rating. Alexandria City High School, which is famous for its football team that inspired the “Remember the Titans” Disney movie, earns a B rating. The high school offers career learning pathways through the Governor's Health Sciences Academy; students can study nursing, surgical sciences, sports medicine, emergency medical services and more.

DASH buses head to Metro stations
“Alexandria has its own bus service called DASH that’s free for anyone to use,” Frieden says. “It takes you to Old Town and the Metro, so you could live in that area and get away with not having a car or only using a car on weekends.” He adds that commuters can usually get to the King Street Metro station in under 20 minutes — from there, residents can board the Yellow or Blue Line to head north toward Arlington or Washington, D.C. The southeast corner of the neighborhood also hosts the Alexandria Union Station, which has Amtrak train routes to New York, Chicago, Norfolk and Miami. Those who opt to drive can merge onto the Capital Beltway or drive on state routes to link with Interstate 395 to drive 9 miles to downtown Washington, D.C.
