Students and artists shape life in this quiet college town
Alfred is an Allegany County town known mostly for Alfred University and Alfred State College. The town has one of the largest student-to-non-student ratios in the country, earning a reputation as “the collegiest college town in America.” “It’s a college town, 100 percent, but it’s quite small,” says Tara Phelps, a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Howard Hanna, who’s been selling homes in the area for over eight years. “There’s not a whole lot in the village itself, so that makes it pretty quiet.” Alfred University also holds the New York State College of Ceramics, which attracts artists with the school and the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum. “A lot of artisans live here in general; artists of all kinds,” says Phelps. Students and residents close to the campuses can easily walk the village’s main streets to access locally owned shops and restaurants.
Small-town staples with big-box stores a short drive away
Locally owned businesses are clustered on or near the town’s Main Street. Noonday is a small market with organic-focused goods, and the Alfred Pharmacy has prescriptions and hygiene products. Collegiate serves breakfast and lunch favorites, The Rosebush offers American dishes in the evening and late-night eateries like Alex's College Spot cater to students. For larger grocery runs, Hornell is a 15-minute drive away with chains like Walmart and Aldi.
The Original Hot Dog Day
The town’s largest celebration, Hot Dog Day, brings both colleges — as well as locals — together in April. First held back in 1972, Alfred started a tradition that has since spread to cities and college campuses throughout the country. The festival is centered around hot dogs, including a community grill, eating contests and wiener dog races. “It’s not just hot dogs, they have a lot of other local artisans come out too,” says Phelps. Alfred’s celebrations also include amusement rides, live music and a parade. The Alfred Farmers Market is also open seasonally, and it kicks off with The Market Sprouts Festival in June.
Homes range from village lots to 10-acre properties
Homebuyers can find colonials and Cape Cods from the early-1900s and more modern ranch-style houses. Because it’s also known as an artistic area, some homes have eclectic styles like Queen Annes and Tudors too. Properties within the village sit closer together, while homes outside the village sit on larger lots ranging from one to ten acres. Houses here typically sell for $125,000 to $400,000.
Well rated Alfred-Almond Central School District
Students may start at Alfred-Almond Elementary, which teaches kindergarten through sixth grade and earns a B from Niche. Alfred-Almond Junior/Senior High gets a B-minus and teaches seventh through twelfth grade. Alfred State College is a public university that enrolls around 3,700 students annually and offers a range of programs. Alfred University is a private college that has around 1,600 students and focuses on the arts.
Nature paths and cultural attractions draw locals year-round
The east end of town holds the Pine Hill Trail, a nearly 3-mile path that weaves through the local forest. Surrounding state forests like Phillips Creek and Turnpike serve as seasonal open hunting grounds. Those seeking indoor activities can visit the Miller Performing Arts Center to see student-run productions. The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum is another popular attraction featuring nearly 8,000 art pieces from the past and present.
Route 244 connects to I-86
State Route 244 passes through the north end of Alfred, allowing for county travel. Residents can also take the route 7 miles north to connect to Interstate 86. St. James Hospital is located 12 miles north. The closest airport, Elmira Corning Regional, is 65 miles away.
