Midway between Chicago and Rockford

Fifty miles from Chicago and Rockford, the village of Algonquin straddles the Fox River. Opposite the village center on the east side of the river, the Algonquin Heights community is beginning to herald changes along its main east-west highway “There’s been a discrepancy of development between west and east of the river, and that’s starting to change,” says Toni Spena, a broker with Coldwell Banker Realty and chairperson of the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Chamber of Commerce. “A few restaurants and a car wash have opened recently on East Algonquin Road.”

New restaurants on East Algonquin Road

One of the new businesses on East Algonquin is Odeo Café, a bakery that makes French pastries, specialty teas and coffee. The atmosphere is cozy, with tables, a couch and a few seats outside. Thai Pot opened in August 2024 and is a family-owned eatery serving stir-fried dishes and vegan soups. In the downtown area, Port Edward is a popular seafood stop with dockside dining on the waterfront. The restaurant was built around a parked sailboat at a dock and there’s a chance to eat a meal inside the boat. There’s also an option to dine inside a 1920s windmill. A Walgreens drug store is at the corner of Algonquin and Sandbloom Roads, along with a Jewel-Osco grocery store further east.
