Small town in the northwest Chicago suburbs
The High Hill Farms neighborhood is on the west side of the Fox River, not far from the downtown area of Algonquin, Illinois, about 45 miles northwest of Chicago. “The big draw is the proximity to the shops on Randall Road and the locally owned shops downtown,” says Karen Goins, a broker with Re/Max Suburban, who also spent a few years of her childhood living in this neighborhood. “One of the draws is that it’s walking distance to one of the schools I attended.” Algonquin’s population is a little below 30,000, providing a small-town feel in the suburbs.
There are plenty of sidewalks in High Hill Farms
Thorughout most of the neighborhood, sidewalks pass by modestly sized front yards and driveways leading to two-car garages. A few homes are on half-acre lots with large backyards. Colonial Revival and split-level are the main styles, with prices between $270,000 and $500,000. “I think this has more housing variety than some of the newer neighborhoods where the houses look the same,” says Bobbie St. John, a broker associate with Brokerocity, who has been selling homes in the Algonquin area for 26 years. The oldest houses are from the late 1970s, with most of the rest built in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Between Randall Road and the downtown area
The neighborhood's housing tracts are between Randall Road's suburban shopping centers tand the locally owned shops of downtown Algonquin. A short drive west leads to Algonquin Commons, an outdoor mall that opened in 2004, anchored by stores like DSW Shoe Warehouse and Old Navy. “Cooper’s Hawk and Portillo’s are restaurants that have recently opened in that area,” St. John says. “It’s a part of town that’s grown.” Walmart Supercenter, Target and Petco are in nearby shopping centers and Meijer and Butera Market for groceries. To the east, close to the Fox River, are the locally owned shops along Main Street in the Old Town District, which was given a facelift in the past five years. One of the shops along this stretch is Makity Make, where people can drop in and work on their personal arts and crafts projects. Restaurants include Short Stack, a breakfast and lunch place, and, closer to the river, Port Edward, a seafood restaurant that was built around a sailboat anchored at the dock. Dining is available aboard the boat and inside a 1920s windmill that’s part of the restaurant's interior design.

A newly renovated Stoneybrook Park
What used to be a playground, surrounded by open green space, has transitioned over the past couple of years to a park that contains courts for bocce ball, pickleball, cornhole and sand volleyball. It’s part of a newly designed Stoneybrook Park. The playground equipment is still there, though it’s also been updated. Jaycee Field is behind Neubert Elementary School and is a baseball diamond ideal for a neighborhood pick-up game or practice. Nature trails course around wetlands in High Hill Park and Nature Preserve, a 30-acre green space nestled in the middle of the neighborhood. Cornish Park is downtown on the shores of the Fox River, where fishing is allowed.
