Allegan's downtown and parks center around the Kalamazoo River
With over 5,000 residents, Allegan is a small and vibrant town nearly equidistant to Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Holland, which is right by Lake Michigan. The Kalamazoo River is the centerpiece of Allegan. It flows through the city’s award-winning downtown, where locals go to shop, dine and attend community events throughout the year. The river also serves as a central recreation spot for canoeing and kayaking, with several parks beside the water.
Revamped downtown features shops, breweries and local restaurants
Allegan's two-street downtown is shaped like a “V” at a curve along the Kalamazoo River. The city finished revamping downtown in 2024 and was awarded “Project of the Year” by the American Public Works Association. Upgrades included widening sidewalks for pedestrians, beautifying the landscaping and turning one-way streets into two lanes to improve traffic flow. Downtown is lined with locally owned shops and restaurants, including several watering holes like Tantrick Brewing by the river, Schaendorf Brewing Company with its beer and large portions of bar food and Sherwood’s Cover, a local dive bar. “Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids are always fighting to be known as 'Beer City USA,' and we’re right in the middle of that,” says Joel Dye, Allegan's city manager. Other popular restaurants include Minnie’s Restaurant, which serves homestyle breakfasts in a historic post office, and Tilt, known for its ice cream and pinball machines. Downtown also has several boutiques, gift shops and other small retailers. Village Market is the main grocery store in town, and there are more big-box retailers like Walmart and Meijer about 20 minutes away in Plainwell.
Historic homes and newer builds offer a wide range of styles
The community's median home sales price is around $270,000, which is about the same as Grand Rapids and approximately $50,000 more than Kalamazoo. However, Holland’s median is about $80,000 more than Allegan because it’s closer to Lake Michigan. Allegan homebuyers can find Victorian-style houses and Colonial Revivals from the late 1800s and early 1900s in the historic district on and around Cutler Street. Other developments feature ranch-style and split-level homes built between the mid-1900s and today.
Riverfront parks offer splash pads, trails and event spaces
Riverfront Park offers a fun experience downtown next to the river, featuring a splash pad and fireplace. It’s right next to Mahan Park, which has an amphitheater. The two parks frequently host events together. The splash pad and the iron bridge over the river light up, adding to the lively night ambiance. Hanson Park is also connected to the downtown riverfront with a boardwalk over the water, a kayak launch and a playground. The Armintrout-Milbocker Nature Preserve has 2 miles of forested trails with river views. Locals can hike there in the spring and summer, enjoy the fall foliage and go cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Local athletic leagues compete at the Allegan Sports Complex.
A summer concert series, county fair, antique show and holiday cheer
Allegan hosts annual events all year long. During summer, locals head downtown for Rollin’ on the River, a concert series held every Friday night at the riverfront stage in Mahan Park. “Rollin’ on the River is a fun way to bring the community together,” Dye says. “You’ll have kids playing on the splash pad, while parents have a drink and listen to music.” Every fall, hundreds of thousands of people come to the Allegan County Fair, which features national touring musicians every year. The fairgrounds also host the Allegan Antiques Show in spring, one of Michigan’s biggest antique markets. In December, Festive Fridays bring holiday cheer to downtown with horse-drawn carriage rides, visits from Santa and the Holly Jolly Trolley. The city then kicks off the new year downtown with a ball drop, featuring the largest New Year’s Eve ball in Michigan. “It’s only about a foot smaller than the Times Square ball, and it has 30,000 twinkling lights that strobe to live music,” Dye says.
Work-Based Learning program at Allegan High School
Of the four elementary schools that serve Allegan, students may attend North Ward Elementary School, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche. They’ll go on to L.E. White Middle School, also graded a B-minus, and Allegan High School, graded a C-plus. High schoolers have the opportunity to participate in the Work-Based Learning program, where they can take on an apprenticeship and work with mentors through local businesses to get hands-on work experience.
Perrigo Company and more jobs in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo
Michigan highways 40, 89 and 222 run through Allegan. Locals can find work roughly 30 to 40 minutes away in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo or Holland. However, Allegan also has job opportunities, including Perrigo Company, the city's biggest employer and the largest store-brand over-the-counter pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world. “If you buy store-brand medicine at Walmart, Target or CVS, it was most likely made in Allegan,” Dye says. The two closest major airports are Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport in Kalamazoo, with direct service to Chicago or Detroit.
