Allenton's rural, small-town feel and limited amenities

Surrounded by farms and cornfields, Allenton is all about quiet, rural living. “It’s pretty small, but [Interstate] 41 goes right through it, so you can still commute to Milwaukee,” about 40 miles away, says Jaclynn Lighthizer, a broker with Seven Hills Realty Group. The interstate also connects to larger nearby towns, where locals can find more dining and grocery options. Although Allenton is home to plenty of commuters, manufacturers like Maysteel Industries keep an industrial presence in town. Plus, Allenton falls into the highly rated Slinger School District, a sought-after school system in Washington County.

Single-family homes and condos available in Allenton

Nationals, bungalows and ranch-style homes make up most housing, sitting on lawns shaded by a variety of trees. Yards run unobstructed to the curb, and gardens add splashes of color and personality. Condos are also available in communities like Dekora Woods. Homes and condos start around $220,000 and reach as high as $340,000, though the condos might also have monthly fees of around $200.

A-rated Slinger schools zoned for Allenton students

Allenton Elementary School is right in the center of town, within walking distance of many homes. For the rest of their schooling, Allenton students will head about 7 miles south to Slinger Middle School and Slinger High School. The high school has a wide range of clubs, including robotics and competitive trap shooting. All three schools receive an A grade from Niche. “The Slinger district is one of the Top 10 in the state,” Lighthizer says. “All of Washington County has great schools, but it’s definitely more desirable in that district just for the ratings alone.”

Small community parks in the center of town and along the river

Veteran’s Memorial Park, the town’s main green space, includes a playground, tennis courts and three baseball diamonds. Riveredge Park’s walking path goes past the playground and baseball diamond and over the East Branch Rock River.

Allenton's annual summer activities bring the community together

The Allenton Lions Annual Car Show has taken place on the first Sunday of July for the past 40 years. Residents enter their cars and trucks in the competition to show them off and potentially win prizes, and there’s live music and food. “There’s also a community picnic every year,” Lighthizer says. “It’s always the third weekend in August.”

Connecting to other Washington County towns and cities

Route 33 goes east and west through Allenton, linking it to the small city of West Bend, 8 miles away. Interstate 41 runs north and south, connecting to Slinger, 7 miles away, and Hartford, 9 miles. Aurora Medical Center Washington County is in Hartford, about 8 miles from Allenton. Milwaukee Mitchen International Airport is 44 miles away.

Just a few dining options, but more down the road

The small community has a couple of gas stations and Resurrection Catholic Parish, but not many restaurants. “Just bars and the church,” Lighthizer jokes. Good Times, one of the bars in town, also serves tacos, pizzas and burgers. Subway is the only chain in town. Gas stations like Mobil and BP include small convenience stores, where locals can stop for quick trips. Sunnyside Up Eggs and Produce started as a backyard garden but is now a local produce stand that offers fresh eggs, produce, and artisan goods like jams and maple syrup. For more restaurant and grocery options, Lighthizer says locals head to the Piggly Wiggly in Slinger or to the Walmart Supercenter in West Bend.
