The urban residential appeal of Dutch Hill
Two miles east of downtown Allentown sits the neighborhood of Dutch Hill, appealing to city dwellers who prefer living in a residential enclave instead of in the heart of downtown. Allentown is the state’s fastest-growing city in recent years, with downtown seeing over $1 billion in investments over the past decade. Dutch Hill residents enjoy proximity to city amenities just outside the neighborhood, including St. Luke’s Hospital and Lehigh Valley International Airport. At the southern edge of Dutch Hill, freight trains pass through the Norfolk Southern Allentown Terminal; a dense patch of woods separates residences from the active railyard.
Dutch Hill offers 20th-century architectural styles
Dutch Hill is divided up by gridded residential streets, some of which have sidewalks. Midcentury homes—including Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and raised ranches—sit side-by-side on uniform lots. Prices range from about $220,000 to $390,000. Townhouses in the form of early 20th-century rowhomes cost between $120,000 and $260,000. Those prices are towards the lower end of the price range for the city of Allentown as a whole, where home prices can reach upwards of $1.8 million, and the median sale price is over $350,000.
Students are zoned for the Allentown City School District
The Allentown City School District, rated C-minus on Niche, serves the neighborhood. Students may attend Mosser Elementary before advancing to Harrison-Morton Middle, which are both rated C-minus, before advancing to C-rated Louis E. Dieruff High. The elementary, middle and high schools participate in the district’s 21st Century Community Learning Center program, which provides homework help and free dinner in addition to enrichment activities that range from mindfulness to theater. Students may enroll in the district’s Virtual Campus for full-time online learning. School choice in Allentown includes magnet schools, charter schools and limited open enrollment, with out-of-district transfers allowed with district approval.
Recreation options include Andre Reed Park and Canal Park
Residents have a few recreation options within the vicinity of Dutch Hill. “Andre Reed Park is the big park on the east side,” says Mandy Tolino, Director of Parks and Recreation in Allentown. “It used to be called Irving Park. There’s a new pool; we call it Irving Pool at Andre Reed Park.” This public pool was redesigned and reopened in 2024. This park also has fields for football, soccer, baseball and softball in addition to a playground and courts for basketball, pickleball and tennis. Due to Andre Reed Park’s location directly across from Louis E. Dieruff High School, student athletes use the park's facilities as well. “It’s used by the community as well as the school,” Tolino says. “The school mostly uses the athletic fields.” Additionally, Canal Park has picnic areas, horseshoe pits, charcoal grills and a covered pavilion. From Canal Park, kayakers can access the Lehigh River and cyclists can access the D&L Trail, which parallels the Lehigh Canal. Locals can also use the skatepark at Keck Park.
Minutes from the hospital, airport and downtown Allentown
Residents can walk or drive to downtown via Hamilton Street Bridge, which crosses the river and has a pedestrian walkway with guardrails. Buses stop along Hanover Avenue, taking passengers throughout Allentown and to other Lehigh Valley cities. St. Luke’s Hospital—Sacred Heart Campus is about 2 miles east of Dutch Hill, and Lehigh Valley International Airport is about 3 miles north. No major highways go through the neighborhood. However, access to Route 22 is 2 miles north, and the highway traverses the Lehigh River Valley and separates the airport from Dutch Hill and other residential areas.
Shopping and dining on the east side of Allentown
Retail and restaurants are right outside the neighborhood. For groceries, shoppers can go to Giant or to one of the smaller markets nearby. In addition to Giant, Lehigh Shopping Center is home to stores for pet supplies, furniture and home décor. Stahley’s, a sports bar and restaurant serving the area since 1968, is a nearby watering hole. Mar & Tierra Restaurant serves Latin American cuisine, including seafood options.
A day at the museum or the Great Allentown Fair
The America On Wheels Museum is one of several museums in Allentown, and the one closest to Dutch Hill. Here, visitors can browse vintage car exhibits and watch the restoration process for classic cars. The Great Allentown Fair brings more entertainment to the city at the end of every summer. This multi-day event has a legacy of over 170 years. Paying homage to the area’s agricultural roots, it includes livestock shows, food vendors, carnival rides and musical entertainment.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
