East Allentown features tree-lined streets, community green spaces and big-box shopping centers just south of the Lehigh Valley International Airport. “Once you get towards East Allentown, you’re out of Center City,” says Rob McCann, an Owner and Broker of Assist 2 Sell who has been selling homes in the area for over 25 years. “It’s a convenient area, and some of the houses there are a bit more affordable.” The community is separated from Center City Allentown by the Lehigh River, and residents enjoy comfortable suburban living about 3 miles outside of downtown and 65 miles north of Philadelphia.

Tree-lined streets with a variety of housing options

The neighborhood features a mix of single-family homes, twin homes and townhomes built around the mid-1900s. Traditional ranch-style and Cape Cod-style homes sit side-by-side on modest lots, with many featuring classic red brick facades. Most homes offer street parking in the front and a garage or driveway in the back. Prices range from around $200,000 to $375,000, depending on the size and condition of the home. Further south, homebuyers can find twin homes and townhomes ranging from about $175,000 to $285,000. According to the CAP Index, the neighborhood has an overall Crime Score of 5.

Proximity to Lehigh Valley International Airport and beyond

East Allentown is just south of Route 22 and the Lehigh Valley International Airport, which offers nonstop domestic flights on four major airlines: Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta and United. The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority provides local bus service to the community, with several stops along main streets such as Airport Road and Union Boulevard. “It’s easier to find public transportation in this area,” McCann says. Residents are about 3 miles northeast of downtown Allentown and about 65 miles north of Philadelphia.

Shopping centers and eateries along Airport Road

Airport Road bisects the neighborhood and provides access to several shopping centers and restaurants. “If you’re looking for a tranquil part of Allentown with lots of shopping, this is a great option,” says Jesse Roldan, a Realtor with Exp Realty who has over 20 years of experience. The Airport Shopping Center includes chains such as Target and Sam’s Club, and locals can head a bit further south to pick up groceries at Redner’s Warehouse Markets. Copperhead Grille is a laid-back sports bar serving elevated pub fare and drinks while showing the latest game. On Union Boulevard, residents can enjoy authentic Dominican dishes at Mangu or head to Aladdin and dine on Middle Eastern cuisine underneath twinkling lights. Neighborhood watering holes include Sherman Street Beer Company, which serves craft beverages and features a rotating cast of weekly events such as trivia, bingo and food truck pop-ups.

Neighborhood park and recreation on the Lehigh River

Next to Louis E. Dieruff High School, Andre Reed Park is named after the Dieruff alum and former NFL wide receiver. The public park features basketball courts, tennis courts, a playground and an outdoor pool. Residents can also head to Coca-Cola Park and watch the Lehigh Valley IronPigs play Minor League Baseball. About 2 miles south, the Lehigh River is a popular spot for fishing, kayaking and boating. The Lou Ramos Center is home to the Lehigh Valley United soccer team, and the indoor club offers various youth teams, soccer academies and more.

Children attend the Allentown City School District

Kids begin their education at Ritter Elementary School before moving on to Harrison-Morton Middle School, with both schools earning a C-minus from Niche. Teens can walk to the neighborhood’s Louis E. Dieruff High School, rated a C-plus. The high school offers a Dual Enrollment Program in collaboration with Lehigh Community College, allowing students to enroll in college-level courses and earn college credit for free.
