West End Allentown
Suburban Neighborhood in Allentown, Pennsylvania
Lehigh County 18104
A mix of urban and suburban streets
Just west of downtown, city streets display a range of rowhomes and duplexes that blend in with the historical architecture found throughout Allentown. Like most cities, street parking is standard, along with little yard space. Prices here range from $150,000 to $400,000, attracting buyers who enjoy walkable streets and proximity to local shops and restaurants. Further west, urban streets give way to suburban landscapes full of single-family homes. “People like Allentown because it has both a suburban and town center feel,” says Anne Geis, a local Realtor with RE/MAX, who has 15 years of experience. These properties come in all shapes and sizes, from ranch-style homes, cozy cottages, charming colonials, Craftsman-style bungalows, and so much more. Shaded backyards offer room for summer barbecues, while canopied streets offer leisurely strolls. Geis says home prices average between $345,000 and $600,000, while stately homes in Rose Garden and Trexler Estates range from $700,000 to $2 million.Miles of meandering walking trails
Green spaces are scattered throughout the community, ranging from small pocket parks like West Park to vast forested grounds. Cedar Beach Park offers afternoon escapes for locals looking to cool off in the community pool or feel the sand between their toes during a round of beach volleyball. This park also features a basketball court, a large fenced-in playground, and walking trails that loop around the waters of Lake Muhlenberg. More scenic trails await at Cedar Creek Park, leading joggers and bikers along Cedar Creek and past Malcoln Gross Rose Garden for a tranquil escape. Trexler Memorial Park is another favorite, full of bike riders and dog walkers as they pass by a small pond, towering trees, old log cabins and the General Harry Clay Trexler statue. Next door is Allentown Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole course open to the public seven days a week.Primary schools to universities
The Parkland School District and the Allentown School District serve the West End community. Those who live closer to the city center may attend C-minus-rated schools on Niche like Union Terrace Elementary School, Trexler Middle School and William Allen High School. Further west, students may attend A-rated schools like Parkway Manor Elementary School, Springhouse Middle School and Parkland High School. Named the No. 1 Best Public High School in Lehigh County by Niche, Parkland High has also won hundreds of district titles and dozens of state championships. West End Allentown is also home to two small private liberal arts institutions: Muhlenberg College and Cedar Crest College.Events at Allentown Fairgrounds
The Allentown Fairgrounds sits in the heart of the West End along North 17th Street. Held at the end of August, locals can enjoy the views from the Ferris wheel, soak up the mouthwatering flavors of funnel cake, lug home a giant teddy bear, and enjoy big-name performances at The Great Allentown Fair. The fairgrounds also host the weekly Allentown Farmers Market, an indoor marketplace open Thursdays through Saturdays. Cedar Beach Park also hosts events like Allentown ArtsFest. This three-day festival showcases art in every genre, from live music to dance to comedy, while attendees can peruse over 100 artists’ work with a glass of wine.Commutes and nearby amenities
West End Allentown is highly walkable, with paved sidewalks throughout most of the city and surrounding neighborhoods. Public transit options are plentiful, with bus stops scattered throughout the community. For commuters who prefer driving, nearby major roads include Lehigh Valley Thruway, U.S. Route 22, and South 4th Street. Interstates 78 and 476 are also close, eventually leading to Philadelphia 60 miles away or New York City 90 miles away. Other amenities include Lehigh Valley International Airport, Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, and numerous houses of worship.A foodie town in the making
Locals can stop by Yocco’s The Hot Dog King for a casual meal or head to Youell’s Oyster House for an upscale night out. Down the road, the 19th Street Theatre offers evening entertainment ranging from plays to classic films. Spots like Grille 3501 and Union & Finch serve up classic American fare, while Ayat is known for its authentic Palestinian dishes. Global cuisines range even wider, from Mexican to Dominican to Cajun and classic Italian joints like Mama’s Famous Pizza and Grill. Fuel up for the day at Nowhere Coffee Co. before perusing the grocery store aisles. Options include the Allen Street Grocery Outlet, Wegmans, multiple Weis Markets or Giant in Village West. “People really love Wegmans around here. It even has its own cafe,” Ginsburg says. Residents also have a quick drive to big box stores like Target along North Cedar Crest Boulevard or the Lehigh Valley Mall for some retail therapy.
