Idyllic, walkable small town

Once a popular vacation spot in the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains, the Village of Altamont today is where people come to live. "It's a very idyllic little village," says Brian Brosen, licensed associate broker with The Capital Team. With views of the foothills, historic architecture and a charming downtown area, Altamont is where neighbors bump into each other on Main Street, and parents meet up at local playgrounds. “I fell in love with Altamont when I babysat here years ago,” says Leanne Royer, a real estate salesperson with CM Fox LLC and 25-year Altamont resident. “Everything is walkable. I told my husband that raising our kids here was non-negotiable.” With historic homes, good schools, local shops and family-owned restaurants, the Village of Altamont is ideal for anyone who enjoys a slower-paced, more community-focused life.

Survey of village homes

Homes in the Altamont range in style and age, and most come with a half-acre or more land. Vintage Victorians built in the 1880s might include five bedrooms and period touches like deep front porches and original hardwoods. Midcentury ranches or split levels feature picture windows and attached one- or two-car garages. Custom colonials from the 1990s offer spacious interiors and party-sized decks. Homebuyers can expect to pay between $300,000 and $650,000 for a single-family home in Altamont. Townhouses and condos list in the $200,000 to $350,000 range. Buyers looking to purchase a home near Bozenkill Creek should also inquire about flood insurance because this part of town tends to flood.

Altamont Fair and Orchards

The Altamont Fair is held at the fairgrounds off Arlington Street in August and includes 4-H exhibits, arts and crafts competitions, animal shows, blue-ribbon cooking demonstrations, a carnival, music groups and entertainers. As the weather turns cooler, people head to Altamont Orchards, 2 miles outside the village, to pick apples, search for the perfect pumpkin and enjoy cider donuts.

From Main Street to mall

Altamont’s small downtown on Main Street features brick sidewalks and businesses that blend well with the historic architecture, such as Farmhouse Tap and Tavern, which serves locally sourced American cuisine and is housed in a former dry goods store. Next door, Remedies Wine and Spirits shares the same Victorian storefront with Bella Fleur Flower and Gift. Main Street Café is a favorite brunch spot down the street, and Paisano's Pizza on Main and Altamont Boulevard serves traditional and specialty pizzas, such Philly steak and chicken pesto. “Food trucks set up in Orsini Park on Mondays when the restaurants are closed,” Royer says. “Events like this bring people out. It’s all about community here.” The closest supermarket is Hannaford on Western Turnpike, about a 7-mile drive, and Crossgates Mall is 10 miles away. "It's kind of the best of both worlds," says Brosen. "You go to Altamont because you want a little bit of land, but you're within 20 minutes of grocery stores, malls and movie theatres."

Remembering Altamont’s history

Historic markers stand proudly in front of many older homes and buildings detailing the property's significance, such as the Severson House, built by an early settler in 1767 or St. John's Lutheran Church, built in 1871. The Altamont Free Library embodies the town's history and collective spirit. Community volunteers transformed this former train station into a beautiful and unique community library. The library often hosts programming at Orsini Park, including a children's storytime and a monthly ukulele meet-up.
