Broad Avenue
Neighborhood in Altoona, Pennsylvania
Blair County 16601, 16602
Historical houses line hilly Broad Avenue streets
Homes in Broad Avenue range from American Foursquares built in the late 1800s and early 1900s to small ranches, cottages and split levels built throughout the 20th century. “There are some beautiful old big houses in that neighborhood. Some are run down and have turned to multi-family homes, and others, people have really loved,” Kuhn says. “I know an artist who lives in that area who lived in New York City, and he bought a big old brick house and refurbished it.” Housing costs depend on the condition of the home: Those needing renovations cost between $60,000 and $150,000, while well-kept properties range from about $150,000 to just over $300,000. Homes line streets along gently sloping hills. Some roads have sidewalks, though many walkways haven’t been maintained over the years. Many houses are decorated with wreathes and American flags on the entryways and trimmed shrubs in the front yard.Highland Park and state parks in the mountains
Highland Park, situated on top of a hill just east of Broad Avenue, has picnic shelters, a disc golf course and a playground. From the hilltop, park visitors can look through the trees to view the expanse of the Allegheny Mountains in the nearby distance. Broad Avenue is close to Westfall Park, which also has mountain scenery and a playground. Several state parks offer recreation in the mountains surrounding Altoona. Among these is Prince Gallitzin State Park, an over-6,000 acre outdoor space with 32 miles of hiking trails and a large recreation lake tucked among the rolling, green mountains.Altoona Area School District serves the neighborhood
Children in the neighborhood may begin at Mowrie A. Ebner Elementary School, which has a C grade from Niche. Students continue to the only middle and high schools in the town: Altoona Area Junior High School and Altoona Area High School. Both schools have C-pluses from Niche but Altoona Area High School also earns an A-minus grade for athletics. The school’s athletic facilities, located just northeast of Broad Avenue in Mansion Park, include a turf football stadium with a track and capacity for 10,400 people, a practice football field, two baseball fields and tennis courts. The site’s sports facilities are also open to the public.Horseshoe Curve and events downtown
Horseshoe Curve, a railroad line completed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in 1854 that sharply turns in a “horseshoe” shape, is a tourist attraction less than 4 miles west of Broad Avenue. Horseshoe Curve exemplifies the new technology and innovation that arose from Altoona’s railroad industry through the 1800s and early 1900s. “It was the greatest feat in the world back then. With a 2% grade, it makes a complete curve, and the tracks go up like a big snake through the mountains,” says Bob Baranik, lifelong Altoona resident and board member of Amtran, Altoona’s transit authority. The Railroaders Memorial Museum, about 2 miles northeast of Broad Avenue in downtown Altoona, teaches visitors more about Altoona’s history in the railroad industry. Downtown Altoona is also the location of community events, such as the Rails & Ales festival in August. Locals gather to taste wine and beer from local businesses and hang out while listening to live music.Facilities near Broad Avenue
Broad Avenue is mostly car-dependent. The neighborhood doesn’t have any Amtran bus stops in its boundaries, but stops on 6th Avenue and Logan Boulevard are nearby and take riders around Altoona to destinations like Logan Valley Mall and downtown. The closest hospital is UPMC Altoona, about 3 miles northeast, and the closest Airport is Altoona-Blair County Airport 18 miles southeast. Pittsburgh, about 90 miles west, is the closest major city.Dining at Allegro and the Knickerbocker Tavern
Allegro is the neighborhood’s date night spot, offering Italian plates such as chicken piccata and eggplant parmigiana in its cozy venue. “The owner has been the chef there for years, and the hospitality is great. You always see people you know,” Kuhn says. Nearby off 6th Avenue, Knickerbocker Tavern serves craft cocktails and American dishes like steak and salmon in its historic building. “Everybody loves the Knickerbocker. It has an outdoor eating area, formerly a little paddock and barn for horses, so it’s like a little courtyard there you can eat at,” Kuhn says. Residents fuel up and grab a bite to eat at Sheetz on Beale Avenue, and weekly grocery runs can be completed at Martin’s and Weis Markets, about 2 miles southeast of Broad Avenue. Logan Valley Mall is also just across the street from Weis.
