Steps from downtown Altoona
Surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains, Calvert Hills sits just outside downtown Altoona. This urban neighborhood mostly consists of historic single-family homes, but it’s near some of the city’s most notable attractions – Jaffa Shrine, the Railroaders Memorial Museum and the Mishler Theatre. Some of Altoona’s best dining options are within walking distance for many locals via the sidewalks of the neighborhood's gridded streets. “Calvert Hills is affordable,” says Brenden Goldizen, real estate investor with Goldizen Real Estate LLC, who lives in Blair County. “But it attracts a lot of different types of residents – young families looking for a starter home or older adults who want to downsize.”
Historic homes on gridded streets
A wide variety of historic homes from the 1930s line Calvert Hills’s gridded streets. American Foursquares, bungalows, Colonial Revivals, Craftsman- and ranch-style homes sit on small, densely packed lots. Many properties have front porches or back decks, and sidewalks make this hilly neighborhood walkable. Potential homebuyers can find a property for between $50,000 and $250,000, with most homes priced around $140,000. Condition is the biggest factor when it comes to price variation. “After World War II, Altoona saw a large dip in jobs and, with that, residents,” Goldizen says. “There have been a lot of eager, young investors and developers who are buying some of these older homes that have been left to rot and giving them a full remodel.” The Keith Hilltop Terrace Apartments are also in the neighborhood. This 55-plus community sits within a converted school building and offers residents updated living spaces, a fitness center and a friendly staff.

Keith Athletic Field, Westfall Park and Gospel Hill Park
Keith Athletic Field is the neighborhood’s main green space. While it’s owned by the school district and the FC14 Soccer Club often uses it, it’s a popular spot for locals to walk dogs or spend time outdoors. It also has a baseball diamond. Nearby, Westfall Park has panoramic views of the Alleghenies and the city of Altoona. Visitors can stroll on short trails at this hilltop park or catch a rec league game at the softball diamond. The American flag has flown at nearby Gospel Hill Park since 1990; it can be seen for miles. The flag is replaced throughout the year so that it stays in pristine condition, and on Flag Day, the city celebrates the flag waving at Gospel Hill Park at Heritage Plaza, where the mayor makes a proclamation.

Near downtown Altoona’s dining scene
Residents will need to travel outside of the neighborhood to access any retail. But less than a mile from downtown Altoona, Calvert Hills is near some of the city’s go-to restaurants. Tom & Joe’s is a family-owned corner diner that’s served Altoonians since 1933. Visitors eat homestyle American fare from red leather chairs at this casual spot with checkered floors and wood-paneled walls. The Clay Cup is another popular spot in the morning and has an industrial vibe, with an aluminum exterior and exposed brick interior. In addition to serving coffee, the café is also a paint-your-own pottery studio. For happy hour, there’s Levity Brewing Co., which reopened in 2022 and has since become one of Altoona’s preferred weekend spots. They host an annual summer festival in the adjacent Heritage Plaza, an open event space near the train tracks. Locals listen to live music, shop from local vendors, play games, eat food and sip drinks. Residents must drive or take an Amtran bus to the nearest grocery store, Martin's, about 2 miles away.
Tuesday is trivia night at the nearby Levity Brewing Co which serves pub grub and its own brews.
