East Juniata
Sports courts and forested hiking trails nearby
The East Juniata Community Center has a basketball court and batting cage that residents can rent to keep active during Altoona’s cold and cloudy winters. The Central Blair Recreation Commission holds events and youth sports games at the center, with free entry. For outdoor ball games, Kustaborder Field is a nearby baseball diamond. Community members drive 2 miles to take their kids to the playground or splash pad at Juniata Memorial Park. Altoona native Scott Reilly says people also frequently enjoy time outdoors in the Allegheny Mountains, which frame Altoona. “Canoe Creek State Park is one of the go-to state parks nearby. You’ll go camping for a weekend or kayaking or fishing on the lake,” says Reilly, who operates the High Guys Video business and YouTube channel. The state park is about 16 miles southeast of the neighborhood. Hunters drive a couple of miles east or west of East Juniata to access hundreds of acres of forested Pennsylvania game lands, where in-season hunting and trapping are legally allowed.Traditional homes and newer ranches on gridded streets
East Juniata’s gridded streets are lined with single-family homes built throughout the 20th century. The older homes in the southern part of the neighborhood sit on smaller lots, while the northern section has properties with larger yards, with space to add landscaping and above-ground pools. The oldest homes are traditional properties and duplexes from the early 1900s, usually priced between $70,000 and $150,000. Cottages from the mid-1900s may cost between $100,000 and $130,000, depending on condition. Ranches from the 1980s and ‘90s tend to require less renovations, so prices fluctuate between $170,000 and $240,000.Casual bars and restaurants in Juniata
East Juniata doesn’t have any restaurants, and there aren’t many businesses besides a couple of office buildings and auto repair and machine shops. But, just south, there are restaurants like McGarvey’s Bar and Grill in Juniata. Locals can order pub fare like sandwiches and wings while enjoying beer and performances from live bands. Railroad workers frequent places like Trianon Bar and Grille, a dive bar serving plates of burgers and fries that allows smoking inside the restaurant. Locals order casual Italian dishes, like stromboli and meatball subs, at Original Italian Pizza. Martin’s, which is about a mile south, is the nearest supermarket for residents to shop for fresh produce and household goods. Retail stores are a little further away—it's 7 miles to a shopping corridor with Target, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Walmart Supercenter and T.J. Maxx. The Juniata bus route travels throughout Altoona
Amtran, Altoona’s public transportation system, operates bus routes throughout the city. Residents catch the Juniata route at stops on the eastern edge of the neighborhood; the bus line has stops at Martin’s, the UPMC Altoona hospital and downtown Altoona. There aren’t many sidewalks in the neighborhood, so residents usually drive. North 4th Avenue takes them 3 miles southwest to downtown Altoona. For longer trips, the on-ramp for Interstate 99 is about 5 miles from East Juniata, and there’s an Amtrak station at the Altoona Transportation Center downtown. Locals can board a train to go west to Pittsburgh in about three hours or east to Philadelphia in five hours.Career preparation programs at Altoona Area High School
Children might begin at Juniata Elementary School, which has a C-plus rating from Niche. They may advance to Altoona Area Junior High School, also rated C-plus, and Altoona Area High School, rated B. The Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center offers programs for high school students to prepare for future careers. Fields of study include welding, culinary arts, computer programming and automotive technology. For college classes, there’s a Penn State satellite campus located 2 miles southwest of East Juniata, where students can complete five associate degrees or 21 baccalaureate degrees.Local ministries and community events in downtown Altoona
The Restored Apostolic Ministries of Altoona organizes a week-long summer Vacation Bible School program and church picnics, along with their weekly Sunday services. The church usually has a float in Altoona’s annual Christmas parade, which traverses downtown in early December. The community bundles up and lines the street to watch marching bands and local groups go by on festive floats. Ickes says that the city gathers for fundraising and arts events downtown throughout the year. “We have the largest three-on-three basketball tournament in the state, HoopFest,” Ickes says. Those who appreciate the arts can go to the historic Mishler Theatre to watch musicals performed by the Altoona Community Theater or concerts by the Altoona Symphony Orchestra.
