Garden Heights
Hanging out at Lakemont Park, watching the Altoona Curve play
Across I-99 sits some of the area’s most notable attractions: Lakemont Park and People’s Natural Gas Field, where the Altoona Curve Minor League Baseball team plays their games. Lakemont Park is an old trolley park that sat at the end of Altoona’s streetcar line. “It used to be a sought-after amusement park, now it’s more geared toward being recreational,” Goldizen says. “Families come out to enjoy the outdoors without being surrounded by thousands of people.” Lakemont Park was built to be a nice place, with picnic areas, tables and benches, where people could spend time when they got off the trolley. It eventually developed into an amusement park, and to this day houses the world’s oldest rollercoaster, Leap The Dips, which is visible from the outfield of People’s Natural Gas Field. “The Curve is a local favorite,” Goldizen says. “It’s a foundational piece of what Altoona is now.” Since 2008, the Curve has had three seasons in which total attendance was over 300,000, most recently in 2023.Logan Boulevard and E Plank Road provide shopping and dining opportunities
Due to Garden Heights’s proximity to the Logan Valley Mall and its surrounding retailers, the western part of the neighborhood has a large commercial presence, particularly near Logan Boulevard and E Plank Road. Chain restaurants like Applebee’s Bar & Grill and Longhorn Steakhouse and fast-casual spots like Jersey Mike’s Subs and Firehouse Subs provide easy dining options. There’s also a Martin's grocery store in the neighborhood. On the other side of the street, there are law offices, wellness services and other small businesses. Farther down E Plank Road is the Logan Valley Mall, which houses retailers such as H&M, Old Navy and Macy’s. Outside the mall sit retailers like Big Lots, Burlington, Weis Markets and Harbor Freight Tools.Homes between Logan Boulevard and U.S. Interstate 99
Most of Garden Heights’s housing is concentrated in a triangular cutout in the eastern portion of the neighborhood, bounded to the west by Logan Boulevard, U.S. Interstate 99 to the east and Frankstown Road to the north. This is an established, hilly neighborhood that lacks curbs or sidewalks on many streets. Above-ground powerlines cast shadows onto properties built in the mid 1930’s. Tall pine trees and small hedges sit in the yards of bungalows, Cape Cods, Craftsman- and ranch-style homes. Potential homebuyers can find properties for between $135,000 and $225,000, with most houses costing about $160,000. There are some homes that cost under $100,000, but these residences require many renovations.Park Hills Golf Club and Highland Park
Park Hills Golf Club lies just south of the neighborhood. This private 18-hole course sits amid mature pine trees with views of the Allegheny Mountains in pocket vistas. Opened in 1920, the club offers members unlimited golf, access to the Tavern 27 restaurant and admission to members-only events and leagues. Highland Park is another nearby outdoor space that’s popular with families and dog-walkers. With horseshoe pits, a playground and a disc golf course, the park provides ample opportunities to get active.Altoona Area School District
Students are zoned for the Altoona Area School District. They can attend Pleasant Valley Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche, before Altoona Area Junior High School and Altoona Area High School, both of which earn C-plus grades. The high school has two buildings – Building A and Building B – connected via a glass pedestrian bridge that keeps students safe. “The high school spent millions on that bridge,” Goldizen says. “It’s a walking bridge over 6th Avenue, one of the busiest streets in the city.” Building B houses the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center, a vocational school educating high schoolers on various trades. The center also serves adults who may be on a different schedule, offering diploma programs in welding, dental assistance, practical nursing and more.Getting around Garden Heights
Logan Boulevard cuts through the center of the neighborhood and leads north. It also forks with East Plank Road, which turns into Union Avenue, a main thoroughfare in the city. I-99 borders the neighborhood to the east and leads throughout central Pennsylvania. Amtran buses run along Plank Road allowing public transit access to the city. In case of emergency, UPMC Altoona is about 4 miles north. To leave the Alleghenies and start a journey somewhere else in the country, the Altoona-Blair County Airport is about 17 miles south.
