An established neighborhood next to the Altoona railyard
Pennsylvania Railroad Company founded Altoona in the mid-1800s, and by the early 1900s, the city had blossomed into a bustling railroad hub. Neighborhoods like Logantown popped up next to the railyard to house workers and their families. Today, Logantown has some of the oldest buildings in the city, though many have fallen into disrepair. “The railroad was booming up through World War II, but when the trains switched over to diesel, the jobs started leaving. From there, it was a slow, steady decline for much of the city,” says Scott Reilly, an Altoona native who operates the High Guys Video YouTube channel and production company. Logantown is just northwest of downtown Altoona, where businesses are beginning to return. “Downtown didn’t used to have anything; these historic buildings were sitting vacant. I moved away for a decade and moved back in 2022 and noticed some revitalization efforts,” Reilly says. Now, there are a couple of breweries and coffee shops that host events situated within walking distance of Logantown.

Historic multifamily homes on compact streets
Queen Anne-inspired duplexes, American Foursquares and multiunit cottages from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are tightly packed on gridded streets; most don’t have front yards or driveways, so street parking is common. A unit in a duplex may cost between $40,000 and $50,000, while an entire duplex or multifamily is often priced between $65,000 and $120,000, depending on condition. Single-family homes appear in Victorian and Colonial Revival designs and are priced between $120,000 and $160,000. Residents may rent a unit in a multifamily property or rent an apartment in one of the neighborhood's complexes.

The neighborhood has a few fast-food joints, local restaurants and convenience stores. Residents can order takeout from Lychee Chinese Food and enjoy large portions of lo mein, fried rice or beef with broccoli. There’s also Petey’s Food and Spirits, a dive bar with pool tables, checkers and slot machines. Locals pick up groceries from Martin’s or essentials from Family Dollar or Sheetz. Since Logantown is just northwest of downtown Altoona, locals are close to restaurants and breweries being added to the area. “The Clay Cup is a coffee shop that opened in 2017. It was one of the first spots I noticed, and thought, 'Oh hey, there’s actually a charming place to hang out down here,’” Reilly says. The café serves lattes, hot tea and breakfast sandwiches in a comfortable environment with exposed brick and original tiles. Reilly adds that newer restaurants have followed suit and embraced the century-old ambiance. Levity Brewing Company opened a large tap room with a full kitchen in 2022; the brewery serves pub fare like nachos, mac and cheese and chili, along with ales and IPAs. Residents can travel 6 miles south to shop at Walmart or Target.

Community festivals in downtown Altoona
Every Flag Day, there’s a ceremony downtown at Heritage Plaza to honor the Gospel Hill American Flag. The Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation organizes the event and manages a fund to ensure that the flag is replaced three to four times a year, depending on wear and weather conditions. The community goes downtown for other events, like the Blair Creators Festival, which celebrates creatives and makers in Blair County. Attendees browse vendors selling jewelry, candles, clothing items, ornaments and other unique pieces as they listen to local bands play and eat snacks from food trucks. A couple of the businesses downtown have more regular events; friends can gather to compete in games of music trivia at Levity Brewing Company or paint pottery at The Clay Cup coffee shop.
