A community in transition in Altoona
The sloping streets of Newburg overlook downtown Altoona, which has begun to see redevelopment after years of economic hardship. “The economy took a major hit after the railroad jobs left in the 1980s and ‘90s. When I was growing up, downtown really didn’t have much,” says Scott Reilly, an Altoona native who moved back to the area in 2022 after leaving for a decade. Businesses are slowly re-occupying the vacant historic buildings, bringing more gathering spaces to the area. “Every time there’s an announcement on Facebook about a new restaurant coming to town, there will be tons of enthusiastic comments. People are glad to see businesses embracing the historic buildings we already have and adding value to them,” Reilly says. Newburg is close to the development, but the neighborhood has a more peaceful atmosphere than other parts of Altoona, as it's a couple of miles away from the train tracks and railyard. The southwestern Altoona neighborhood has narrow residential streets, but larger grass backyards and groves of trees offer green space.

Newly opened eateries in downtown Altoona
Many Newburg residents live within a mile of the eateries in downtown Altoona. Tom and Joe’s is a longstanding restaurant that’s been owned by the same family for three generations. The nostalgic diner serves homestyle breakfast platters, grinder sandwiches and cake-by-the-slice. J.J. Hadley has wood-fired and Detroit-style pizza and beer on tap. For more craft beer, locals can stop by Railroad City Brewing Company or Levity Brewing Co., which both have a comfortable, industrial atmosphere with exposed brick walls. For groceries, the First Stop Shop Discount Grocery Outlet is less than a mile southeast, and Aldi is 2 miles in the same direction. Shopping centers in southeast Altoona have popular stores like Target, T.J. Maxx and Ulta Beauty.

Near Newburg, sports games for kids and wild game for adults
Newburg’s primarily urban landscape doesn’t have any parks, but there are plenty of chances for outdoor recreation nearby. Teenagers play pickup games on the Donald E. Witherspoon Memorial Basketball Courts, and Westfall Park has a baseball field where kids can practice their swing. Garfield Park is larger and about a mile south, offering pickleball courts and soccer and softball fields. On the weekends, residents can head to the Pennsylvania game lands that are to the west of Altoona, where in-season hunting and trapping is legal. Boaters and fishermen often drive 16 miles northwest to Prince Gallitzin State Park, where they can explore a 1,635-acre freshwater lake. The state park has over 26 miles of lake shoreline to explore and forested nature trails that lead to views of waterfalls and scenic overlooks.

Bungalows and ranch-style properties with green space
Houses sit fairly close together in Newburg, but lots are slightly larger than in neighborhoods closer to the rail yard, allowing residents to decorate their lawns with rounded shrubbery and add above-ground pools and swing sets to their backyards. “People in that area are taking pride in their homes and getting into fixing them up and adding more landscaping,” Reilly says. The neighborhood’s oldest homes were constructed in the early 1900s and are usually bungalows and workers' cottages. Depending on their condition, these sell for anywhere between $40,000 and $150,000. Some houses were added in the latter half of the 20th century. Ranch-style homes from the 1970s usually have modern features like vinyl flooring and insulated windows and require fewer renovations, so they are priced between $150,000 and $190,000.

Community gatherings in downtown Altoona
Community gathering places, like the St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church, have regular services. Since Newbury is convenient to downtown Altoona, residents don’t have to travel far for other events. “Since there have been more breweries opening up in the area, food trucks have been following. There are festivals like Rails and Ales that will have activities and beer and different food trucks,” Reilly says. The Rails and Ales Brewfest is held in August at Heritage Plaza and features samples of craft beer and a homebrewing contest. The city also gathers for seasonal events, like Christmas in Olde Town. Neighbors enjoy visiting with Santa, listening to festive music and a tree lighting at the November event.

Bus stops and convenient roadways to travel throughout Altoona
Cracked sidewalks lead to bus stops operated by Amtran, Altoona’s public transportation service. Residents board the Crosstown line, which has stops at Walmart and Target. It also goes north to the transit center near downtown and the Penn State Altoona satellite campus. State Route 36 bisects the neighborhood, offering a convenient route for drivers to travel 4 miles to the shopping centers in southeastern Altoona. Interstate 99 also runs through the eastern section of the city, allowing drivers to travel throughout central Pennsylvania. Downtown, locals can catch Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian train to travel west to Pittsburgh in 3 hours or east to Philadelphia in 5 hours.
