Residential community bordering Penn State Altoona
Wehnwood, about 2 miles north of downtown Altoona, Pennsylvania offers suburban housing a short drive from the city. The neighborhood borders Penn State Altoona, a commonwealth campus of the larger university. But locals say that they don’t really notice the students, with the school's current enrollment under 3,000. Plus, this neighborhood doesn’t see a lot of college students or renters – most residents live in single-family homes that they own. But long-term residents and students alike enjoy panoramic views of the Allegheny Mountains. “A lot of younger families are moving to Wehnwood,” says Brenden Goldizen, real estate investor with Goldizen Real Estate LLC, who lives in Blair County. “Those homes are exactly they’re looking for – they’re priced well and in a nice area.”
Rooting for the Lions at Penn State Altoona
Penn State Altoona sits right next to Wehnwood. A commonwealth campus of Penn State University, the roughly 2,500-student college provides a small, close-knit atmosphere with the resources and opportunities of a large research university. The campus has a range of undergraduate programs, including bachelor's degrees in fields such as engineering, business and communications, though students can transition to the main University Park campus if desired. Those who live nearby but are not students enjoy taking scenic walks through the school or using the recreation facilities, including tennis courts, the soccer field and the track. “It’s mostly new high school graduates who attend Penn State Altoona, but there are also some adults who are going back,” says Goldizen, who attended the college. “The school is small enough that if you live nearby, you don’t notice the students.”
The Penn State Altoona Lions are a proud mascot and are adjacent to the Wehnwood neighborhood.

Established neighborhood with walkable streets
Wehnwood is an established neighborhood of well-maintained homes from the early 1900s to the 1950s. To the east of Juniata Gap Road, ranches, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and split-levels line wide, walkable streets that rise and wind with the neighborhood’s hills. While there aren’t any sidewalks in this part of Wehnwood, the area doesn’t see a lot of through-traffic, so residents can walk their dog or go for a family bike ride with ease. On the other side of Juniata Gap Road, closer to the university, there are sidewalks and lots are smaller. Bungalows and Cape Cods are common over here, where it’s closer to the neighborhood’s dining options. Prices range from $100,000 to $300,000 throughout Wehnwood, with most homes costing around $150,000. “The real estate inflation that we’ve been seeing throughout the country hasn’t really affected Blair Country – yet,” Goldizen says.

A bit further up 25th Avenue, Mama Randazzo’s Pizzeria is a go-to Italian spot that also offers some American fare, like burgers and wings. Juniata Memorial Spray Park is just outside the neighborhood. This is a great place to take the kids in the summer, with a small waterpark where buckets pour and fountains spray. Parents can watch from shaded picnic tables or grab something to eat from the snack bar. At the end of the day, kids can run around the park’s playground or basketball court to dry off. The Allegheny Mountains surround Altoona and offer several state parks and hiking trails, like the 17-mile Lower Trail, which begins at Canoe Creek State Park, about 15 miles east of the neighborhood. The nearly 1,000-acre Canoe Creek State Park is also home to Canoe Creek Lake, which is a popular place to fish and has a sand beach that’s open to the public in the summer.
