Suburban community in industrial East Amarillo
While large swathes of East Amarillo are filled with train tracks, salvage yards and acres of ranch land, Eastridge is a residential neighborhood with almost no industry in sight. The community’s restaurants, markets, parks and schools serve the entire East Amarillo area. Eastridge also has a prime location on U.S. Route 66, a major thoroughfare that is lined with businesses and connects the rest of the city. “It’s a really diverse neighborhood, and right off old Route 66. It has a ton of restaurants on the south side and lots of markets, and it’s really reflective of the people who live there,” says William Wheeler, an Amarillo local and Realtor with Fathom Realty.

Eastridge ranch homes weather Amarillo’s wind and storms
Ranch-style homes between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet are the most common type of property in Eastridge. Most homes are from the 1950s and 1960s and are decorated in red brick and pops of yellow, red and teal paint. The average price range for the neighborhood is $100,000 to $160,000. When newer homes built after 2000 occasionally hit the market, the asking price can exceed $200,000. The local streets tend to be flat, making it easy to walk on the narrow sidewalks. Gardens and blooming trees are common to find behind the brick, wood and iron fences that surround most homes. Eastridge is in one of Amarillo’s floodplains, but despite this location, Wheeler says the area is not known for flooding. It is still exposed to the rest of Amarillo’s rapidly changing weather, including high winds and spring tornados.

Future musicians start out in Amarillo Schools’ orchestra
The Amarillo Independent School District (ISD) includes Eastridge Elementary School, rated B-plus on Niche. Travis Middle School earns a B-minus, while Palo Duro High School gets a B. Amarillo ISD is the only school district in the area to offer an orchestra program, and Amarillo musicians consistently rank highly in statewide performances. Eastridge is 7 miles from Amarillo College, which Niche named one of the top community colleges in Texas. The college has a notable fine arts program with a theater, concert hall and opera house.

Route 66 is Eastridge’s biggest road
U.S. Route 66, known locally as East Amarillo Boulevard, runs on the south side of Eastridge and connects it to downtown Amarillo, 4 miles away. Eastridge is 7 miles from the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport and Wheeler says it is far enough away that the sound of planes flying overhead is minimal. Amarillo City Transit’s Route 23 operates in the area as a public transportation option. For locals who drive, Fritch Highway and North Lakeside Drive are two other large thoroughfares that link to Amarillo’s outermost loop. Local media has repeatedly named Fritch Highway one of the most dangerous roads in Amarillo for the high rate of crashes that occur there every year.

Knocking down pins at Eastridge Lanes
Eastridge School Park on Northeast 16th Avenue is the neighborhood’s only green space. The small park next to Eastridge Elementary School has a wading pool and shade trees for some relief from the Panhandle heat. Eastridge Baptist Church and the Burmese Muslim Community of Amarillo on Aster Street are both next to the park. Along East Amarillo Boulevard, a large bowling ball and pin-shaped sign by the main road welcomes visitors to Eastridge Lanes, a long-standing community staple. The 32-lane bowling alley has been a favorite place for birthday parties or a causal night out since it first opened in 1959. “On a Friday or Saturday night, this is everyone’s favorite place to be, little kids or grandmas,” says Hanna Riley, an employee at Eastridge Lanes.

Markets and noodle shops line Route 66

Multiple Thai restaurants surround these markets, including Super Bowl Noodle and Thai House, both on Columbine Street. Somali African Safari Restaurant, one of Eastridge’s two Somali restaurants, is also on East Amarillo Boulevard and serves traditional dishes like ginger tea and goat meat with rice. Burmese Theravada Buddhist Fellowship on East Amarillo Boulevard is less than a mile away from this hub of markets and restaurants.
