Amarillo’s railroads are front and center in Gables
Even if Amarillo locals haven’t heard of Gables, they are probably familiar with the industry that surrounds it. The small community neighbors Interstate 27 to the north, Tradewind Airport to the east and train tracks all around. Most of the businesses next to Gables revolve around the railroad or the airport, and it is also not uncommon to see a grain silo or a trucking yard in the area. “Amarillo has a lot of manufacturing jobs, and has a lot miners and drillers in the oil and gas industry,” says Sam Riddle, Texas native and Realtor for Keller Williams in nearby Lubbock. While Amarillo’s ever-steady rail and agriculture industries have a large presence close to the neighborhood, Gables itself remains largely residential and offers well-ranked schools and connections to downtown.

Gables bungalows come with an accessible price tag
Bungalows and ranch-style homes built in the 1950s are the most common type of property in Gables. These homes tend to be under 1,500 square feet and are popular choices for homeowners or investors looking to add their own personal touch to a midcentury property. A Gables home ranges from $100,000 to $200,000. “Amarillo is over $100,000 less than the national average sales price, so if you’re coming from another place in the country, it’s going to be a breath of fresh air,” says Derek Manasco, Amarillo native and co-owner of MPACT Real Estate. Instead of sidewalks, local streets are lined with narrow yards, short driveways and wooden fences. The southern portion of Gables, around Southwest 43rd Avenue, is in one of Amarillo’s many flood plains, while the northern part is less prone to flooding.

I-27, Tradewind Airport and miles of rail
Interstate 27 borders the community and connects Gables to the rest of Amarillo. Gables is 3 miles from downtown Amarillo, and 7 miles from Amarillo’s major hospitals like Amarillo VA Health Care System and Northwest Texas Healthcare System. The area east of South Polk Street is filled with many distribution centers, tow yards and grain silos. These work sites, along with the nearby Tradewind Airport, can lead to excess noise.
