Secluded neighborhood in the midst of southwest Amarillo growth
Just south of Texas State Loop 335, Grey Hawk is on the edge of Amarillo's city limits. The neighborhood features custom-built estate Craftsman homes on 1- to 10-acre lots. Its location in southwest Amarillo is in a growing area near many of the city’s national retail brands, restaurants and is only 12 miles from downtown. “It’s secluded and harder to get into this neighborhood compared to some of the newer ones being built in southwest Amarillo,” says Kendra Martin, a Realtor with Lyons Realty, who has sold homes in the area. “It’s not often that homes come up for sale in Grey Hawk because when families move back there, they tend to stay for 15 to 20 years.”

Custom builds on at least an acre
Narrow streets, only visited by residents and their guests, feature large custom-built Craftsman properties perched on at least an acre of land. The size of the lots creates some space between neighbors but also allows homeowners to build shops for storage and entertainment or have barns for horses on their properties. “These homes have high craftsmanship. They weren’t built saying, ‘Hey, we need to build a bunch of homes on an acre to make some money.’ They’re all custom builds,” Martin says. Homes start around $850,000 and can quickly increase over the $1 million mark as house size and acreage increase.

A paved walking trail encircles the green space and has a playground and hard-surfaced basketball courts. It is one of the 13 neighborhood parks offering a splash pad open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Near southwest Amarillo’s retail corridor
Residents can choose between the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Arden Road or Natural Grocers on Hillside Road for weekly groceries. An address in southwest Amarillo puts homebuyers near many national chains and local restaurants. Heading north on Soncy Road leads to numerous big box stores like Academy Sports, Target and Sam’s Club. This area is also home to the Westgate Mall, the city’s lone shopping mall with more than 80 storefronts. For a bite to eat, 575 Pizzeria is a locally owned pizza shop with an extensive craft beer menu. Cask and Cork is in the Town Square mixed-used development and offers a rooftop patio. “Everyone I talk to wants to be in southwest Amarillo,” says Alejandro Rocha, a Realtor with Coldwell Bank First Equity, who has sold homes in the area. “It is where the city’s growing and is a very attractive location.”

A night out in downtown Amarillo
Despite property lots being spread out and no HOA, Grey Hawk still has a strong community feel. “I don’t know how they get to know each other, but they all do. It has a small-town feel, and people tell their neighbors when they think something is off,” Martin says. Locals can make the 12-mile trek northeast downtown, where they can experience live sports with the Amarillo Sod Poodles baseball team or the fine arts at Globe-News Performing Arts Center. City Center Amarillo is a non-profit that is behind the revitalization of downtown. It hosts numerous events, including the High Noon on the Square, a mid-week summer concert series on the lawn of the Potter County Courthouse.

The real windy city
Located in the High Plains, the city’s wide-open landscape combines with persistent atmospheric pressure to make Amarillo the windiest city in the country, with average gusts of 13 mph. Although the wind sometimes brings the smell of nearby cattle ranches, it does keep pollutants out of the air. Amarillo experiences all levels of temperatures, from freezing winter days to over 100 degrees in the summer. The city can experience severe weather in the form of thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. From Joseph Road south to Myatt Drive, the southeastern portion of Grey Hawk is at a higher risk for flooding. The Federal Emergency Management Agency does encourage all Texas homebuyers to purchase flood insurance, while federal lenders will require it in higher-risk flood zones.
