South Amarillo neighborhood with nearby schools and shopping
Oakdale is an established south Amarillo neighborhood that mixes proximity to schools, restaurants and shopping, with the ability to quickly get anywhere in the city. The community allows potential homeowners to walk to the local elementary school or take a short drive to numerous retail and restaurant options. Being south of Interstate 40 makes all of Amarillo’s retail and entertainment options accessible to residents. “The city is not that large, so you can get across town in 20 minutes,” says Ann Riffel, a longtime city resident and realtor with French and Company Realtors. “Depending on your preferences, nothing you'd want to do is really out of reach.”

Oakdale also has a couple of ranch-style homes in the neighborhood.

Brick ranch-style houses and newer craftsman bungalows
Narrow neighborhood streets are lined with sidewalks that make the community walkable. Brick bungalows with hipped roofs constructed between the 1960s and 1970s make up most of the home inventory. Along Southeast 27th Street, there has been some development, with newer ranch-style homes built in the early 2000s. Regardless of address, property lots are tight and feature a garage, fenced-in backyards, and a collection of trees in the front yard. Most homes sell between $130,000 and $250,000, with newer homes selling at the higher end. “The market across Amarillo has slowed down because of the high interest rates. Homes are sitting in Oakdale, and I think it’s because listings are being priced too high,” Riffel says.
Red-brick bungalows is one of the more common style of homes in Oakdale.
While most homes are single-level in Oakdale, there are a few two-story homes in the area.

Attending the neighborhood’s Oak Dale Elementary
Oakdale is part of the Amarillo Independent School District, which scores an A-minus on Niche. A district of innovation, leadership has some of the same flexibilities as a charter school and more control over the curriculum. Students attend the neighborhood’s Oak Dale Elementary, which scores a B-minus on Niche. Middle school begins at Bowie Sixth Grade Campus before moving to Bowie Middle School. The schools rank as a C-plus and B on Niche, respectively. Caprock High School gets a B from Niche and offers an orchestra program. “We’re the only district in the area that offers an orchestra program, and instruction can start in the fifth grade,” says April Brownlee, who works in the communications department for the AISD.

Staying active at the community Oak Dale School Park
Next to the elementary school, Oak Dale School Park features a community playground. The park has ample open space for a picnic and places for pick-up or recreational soccer matches and baseball games. Along Southeast 34th Avenue, Rick Klein Park is a larger regional green space with trails for a walk or run across its scenic terrain, and also serves as a local sports complex. The neighborhood is less than 2 miles north of the Comanche Trail Golf Course, one of the two city-operated courses. The complex features two 18-hole Scottish link-style courses and practice facilities for local golfers to hone their game.

Easy access to I-40
The ACTransit bus line is the city’s public transportation option, with multiple stops along South Bolton Street. Oakdale is also just south of I-40, which is how commuters get downtown. Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport offers flights from American, Southwest and United Airlines and is 7 miles east on I-40, while Northwest Texas Healthcare System, a teaching hospital, is 10 miles west. The neighborhood has multiple places of worship, including Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Bolton Street Baptist Church and Living Water Family Church.

One of the windiest cities in the country
Persistent low atmospheric pressure and vast open space make Amarillo one of the windiest cities in the country annually, with wind gusts averaging more than 13 mph. The city sees temperatures above 100 degrees in the summer and below freezing in the winter. It’s also susceptible to severe thunderstorms, tornados, flooding and wildfires. Oakdale is not on the floodplain, but FEMA recommends that all Texas homeowners invest in flood insurance due to the state’s history with flooding.
